Default Questions about Scapa Flow

Hello everyone! I'm a new Silent Hunter III player.

I started out playing Aces of the Deep in 1994 when I was still in High School. I don't remember what interested me to buy the game, but once I did I was totally hooked on the campaign mode. It was insane the amout of time I put into that game. Got me interested in learning more about WWII and submarine warfare though.

Anyway I was cleaning though some old boxes last week and found my old AOD spiral bound manual. It brought back so many memories! So I immediately started searching for the modern day equivalent and found SHIII. I was totally blown away! Amazing game. It's got all the good things I enjoyed in AOD.

I started a 100% realism 1939 campaign in Flotilla 1. I completed my first patrol and decided to take a trip to Scapa Flow since my patrol area was next to it. I snuck in without incident but now I'm stuck. My intent was to wait around for the Royal Oak but she's not shown herself. I've been sitting stationary, at silent running, offshore for 3 weeks submerged. I only surface at midnight fpr a few minutes to replenish the air in the boat.

It's now October the 13th and I've not seen a single thing. I've been stationed between the destroyers and the docks. Did I head in too far and missed her? I ran some searched on the board but could never find anything about the exact location she's at.

I'm so happy I found this community. Thanks in advance for the help, and I apologize for the lengthy post.

You aren't allowed to go after the Royal Oak in the regular game.

If you go to the wikimanual (there's a link in the stickies), you can actually find "spoilers" as to what you can find in Scapa Flow.

Actually, I think there SHOULD be a capital ship in Scapa Flow in the timeline you are in, but it isn't the Royal Oak.

Here it is:

I think the Revenge is supposed to be there right about now.

Thanks. I had seen that already. I'm still not sure if the ship is going to be moored at the docks I am watching or just sailing around the bay in front of the destroyers. That picture I posted above is the position that I have been waiting at submerged.

welcome to the club...
many players like you was stunned by AOD, me too. of course everyone thought "wow, SH3 must kick @ss and its surely super-real!"

to make it short, its not. in stock SH3 you have no:
- wolfpacks
- harbortraffic (one little fisherboat dont counts...)
- useful communications between Bdu and you

but you have:
- many bugs
- more bugs

and much more...

but dont worry, there are severeal great mods out there which try to bring as much as possible to this game. now there is MUCH harbor traffic, a real living world, allied subs (but they cant attack etc.), more ships, a mega bunch of REAL messages (from the war era) bugfixes etc. etc. etc.

so just pick up what you need and have fun

The times I've seen Carriers and other nice targets in Scapa they have been parked outside of the picture you posted. I've never seen one actually parked in port.

Just about exactly 180 from your pos. there, say 6 or 7 km is where they often are.

I've never waited in a port for ships to come. Just a sense from the game I guessed it would be unlikely or very rare. You are better off returning and going back next patrol, I think.

But yeah, you don't have to go that far in as far as I know. Others may have seen otherwise. Not sure.

like he said, u will probably have to move out a bit more. at Loch Ewe there are destroyers moored in the docks but i've never noticed that in stock SH3 Scapaflow.

Great! Thanks for the help guys. Is the stock game really that bad? I've been playing the stock game because I usually try to avoid mods for stability reasons.

I enjoyed the unmodded game quite a bit, but once I put the NYGM tonnage mod on it's been SO much better. And unlike other games where mods are usually put out by some guy with a few extra hours on his hands, most of the mods here are really well done by a team of people who must either not have day jobs or else don't sleep.

In short, do a little checking on the mods and try one out. The two big boys are the Greywolves (GW) and Not Your Grandmother's Tonnage War mod (NYGM). If you download and use a handy little program called JSGME you can install and uninstall mods so easily and cleanly it is amazing. Add on to that another wonderful program called SH3 Commander and you'll be all set to play this game like it should have been when it shipped.
