I've been reading the spec sheets on some subs and a lot of them have 2 different periscopes equipped, an "Attack" periscope and a "Search" periscope.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...-688-specs.htm http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...-688-schem.htm http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...-774-schem.htm What's the difference between the two? I can speculate, but its still a little unclear about why the two different types...

The search scope has a big lens to let in lots of light (for low light operations, not really important in the era of LLTV) and gives a wide field of view (useful for… well… searching).
The attack scope is smaller (harder to see) has a more limited field of view and has gadgets like radar range finders (now laser range finders). |

Good to know...Even the VA is showing two different types of scopes for its optical mast.

Attack scopes are generally taller (greater distance to horizon) and thinner (lower cross-section/visual profile). They are also rarely used, as they do not gather as much light and the image quality is lower. That is not always the case, but it is generally true.

I was wondering why the range finding system in DW scopes is based on visual manipulation and not on laser technology (laser range finding is so common and faster).
is this the real situation on the subs that are moddled for DW? |

I drive scared in Virginia. I prefer to fly over. Thank god for California licenses, they don't suspend my license when nasty east-coast states ask them to.

On US Subs, the #2 Scope is the Electronic one, with LLTV, OMNI RF Sensor, and in some, limited radio reception/transmission. As the name implies, its all electronic. It's the prefered scope due to the OMNI RF Sensor that lets the operator know that there is radar in use up topside and the scope may be detectable.
The #1 scope (attack) is all optical/mechanical. Pretty much the same type of scope that was used on WWII Fleet boats. Smaller window and mast head width, produces smaller wake. Smaller head window lets in less light, but because the optical train has no LLTV mirrors, etc, it's more usefull under low light conditions when use of the #2 scope LLTV would obscure or washout very small details that the operator needs to see. ![]()
