Default Engines sounds in GW

The sounds of diesel and electric engines are much more quiet than in stock SH3...is this more realistic? I would think that to a listener within a submarine the diesel engine would make quite a noise when surfaced. And also the electric engines would make some noise...for example opening of tubes makes quite a big noise...Correct me if I am mistaken. If the sounds are more realistic than before I take it

I would agree - the engine sound is really too low in dBs. Having served on ships for some time, the sound of the engines can be heard everywhere, less so on the bridge, but very much so within 10m of the engine room. Certainly couldn't hear a ticking clock over the sound. Presumably, even when stopped, a sub had generators running. Running at full speed you would expect quite a bit of vibration noise as well?
Is there a way to turn up the dBs of the engine as there is to turn down the clock? Or is it back to CoolEdit?
Apart from that GW has enhanced the Sim a lot. Still running with it and watching out for new things Thanks for all the hard work to those responsible.

you can edit every soundfile yourself with the windows recorder... just open a *.wav file and change the volume to your taste.

but,
at my system i can hear the engines while standing on the brigde...quietly, but they are there. that was the goal. its not realistic that your ears get hammered if youre standing on the brigde...

with the clock, i agree, its way too loud and very disturbing. i found a few "sound bugs", i think they will be fixed with the next update...

patience...

Sorry Guys to bust in, but i think this must be something in your sound setting.
The GW Diesel sound is anything but weak. I churns like a Harley!
Sure it's somewhat differen than my old Truck-like sound but for sure not low. I love that sound!
Try to adjust your sound settings in game or the OS maybe (play around and see what happends)

A Flank-speed on the Bridge i can hardly hear my "WO" yellin' the contacts!

@MLF You're right mate, but i can barly make out the clock when at flank, or full

As for the Electric. well they're much quiter, which is realistic.
But still in the range of normal hearing.
:hmm:

Myxale:
yes on the bridge it's ok for me. But if I am surfaced and running on diesels and then go under the bridge into the control room, the engine sound is a lot quieter than on the bridge, which I think should be opposite (even on flank)

I do not have this mod installed so I don't have a reference to the loudness of GW. However, the enignes were actually very quiet inside the sub as well as when surfaced. if the engine room doors were closed, the sound of the engines was barely audible throughout the sub and almost silent on the surface. Especially if the hatch was closed. One would be able to tell what speed the engines were set to by the amount of vibration on the bridge more than the actual sound of the engines. If the engine room doors were open then the sound would of course be louder. There are a few quiet scenes in Das Boot were this is noticeable, the diesel sound is just background noise.

Is the humming sound that's like feedback taken care of in GW? Not sure what causes it but SHIII is the only sim I have that does this. It's present with and without the Sound fix mod.

When I change from maps or interior to outside and views in the water I get this loud god-forsaken humming that tries to blow out your eardrums.... with headphones or even speakers. No mic plugged in either. And there are times too it's not present at all. I figured it was something to do with engine sound but not sure.

I get it with using mods I've picked. I'm not using RUB, IUB, or NYG.

thy turning down your sound card acceleration in dxdiag, seems to be the most common fix for this problem

Well, this is what I am trying to find out...if the previous sounds levels were realistic or the silenced ones in GW. As far as the opinions go, the film - Das Boot presented that the sound of engines in a submarine were quiet. On the other hand MLF says that diesels are quite loud on a ship. I compared GW sound files to the stock SH3 sounds:
Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav -> completely different sounds...GW sound has lower volume and not that high pitched
- this change sounds right

Submarine_diesel_underwater.wav -> the same samples, but in GW the sound is more silent (-30% - 40% maybe)
- here I have doubts, which one is right?

Submarine_electric_exterior.wav -> completely different sounds, GW's has much lower volume and is low pitched.
- also doubts, but I tend to think that electric engines were quieter than in stock SH3, so probably right

I will welcome any other opinions and hope we will come to some conclussion. Thanks to all, who have answered until now.

das Boot is not being presented as evidence, but as a representation. the engines of a large ship do not quite equal that of a submarine. Subs inherently being built for stealth and silence. My information comes from Jurgen Oesten. http://uboat.net/men/oesten.htm This was a debate back when we did DBSM-PS for SH2.Somewhere in between very quiet and thunderingly loud lies the correct sound. I believe, based on what should be a fairly reliable source, that the sound is a lot less loud than we all would think it would be. The bottom line is adjust the sound level to where you would like it to be, it is your game. if you want to hear the engines thumping away because that is how you think it should sound, by all means crank it up if you want it to be realistic, turn them down.

I agree with lafeeverted. My knowledge was based on my life on board surface ships that were not built specifically for stealth. I think I'll put the quieter clock mod on, and then perhaps I'll hear the diesels (always a nice homely sound). Also the engines on the ships were slightly larger than those in a sub

I'll then crank up the volume slightly until it rocks me off to

Yes I know that I can change sounds the way I like it, but I wanted to know, how was it in real submarines. Now I get the idea and owe you a big thanks! I'll do it as MLF says and my thanks goes to him too.

Lafeeverted, I'll give a try...thanks. S!

Only I don't have a sound card per-say... just onboard sound with the motherboard.

Edit:
Seems to have worked ok. Thanks again Lafeeverted.
