Default dear Towed Array...

I heard from someone, that in the reality the Towed Array is rarely used, mainly for three reasons:

1. it's very easy to break
2. it's extremely expensive
3. it's no longer produced

doe this reflect the reality?

The main reason it would not be as useful now is its limited utility in warm littoral waters with shallow bottom depths and lots of noise. In those areas, due to the shallow water and the nature of the missions, the persicope is used a lot.

There is one very large submarine community that almost always have the TA out, but they are not in the game (for good reason...SSBNs lead uneventful lives).

That raised my curiosity...

Yep! It's a pain to guide the wire thru the couplers when you first deploy it too!

I saw in some pictures that the Virginia class has three sensors / side, named "light weight aperture arrays".

What is the capability of those can they overclass the TA ?

Seawolf has them as well, in game they are referred to as the hull array.

I'm not sure if the WAA is as capable as the towed array, but I seriously doubt it.

What, doing 3kts poking holes in the ocean for weeks on end isn't exciting?

That depends on if COMFLT decided to place a 688 to escort you out and played their own games with you.

I sure as hell hope they lead uneventful lives. The alternative would be a bad thing. A VERY BAD THING!

Easy to break? Definately.
Expensive? C'mon, it's a 688, complete with production from the lowest bidder.
No longer produced? I simply cannot say.

About easy to break... in how many ways?

In DW it's about going to fast or (in SC, not tested in DW) going backwards

Sharp diving angles, or on the FFG rough weather at low speed.

Someone once said their FFG lost its TA when it was severed by a merchant's screw... :hmm:
