Great book but the film was a bit dodgy. Farewell. |

Are you kidding?! I was afraid to turn on the bathroom faucet for a week after seeing that movie when it first came out.

That movie did a major dis-service to sharks of all types, but I guess I probably don't need to reiterate that in any detail.
Did see a Mythbusters episode recently where they tested what a real shark of that size was capable of - and yes - it coud smash a small whole in a boat, and can rip of a shark cage with its weight alone (estimated at 3000 lbs.). Other things they tested that were busted include shooting a scuba tank - they shot two different tanks under full pressure (and at my prediction), it just turned it into a small rocket engine - no explosion. They even used the actual tanks as found in the actual movie so that someone couldn't say that they were different tanks! Other things that were bogus too were dragging the boat backwards - an impossibility for a shark that size (we all knew this before hand too) and holding those bobbing yellow barrels under the water - they exhibited 1300 pounds of pulling force before only three of them slid under the water (And jaws pulled 5 or 6 underwater for long periods of time?). They used the exact yellow barrels from the movie. Basically - Jaws was impossible in more ways than one! -S |

Peter Benchley latter in life became a supporter of the Great White. The problem is with the individual I remember a story of a women running down the street, her reason trying to get away from the shark! Just goes to show the crazy world we live in
Long Live the Great White Shark. |

In his later films, John Ford tried to do some justice to the indians whom he described as faceless, idiotic barbarians that just waited to get hit by clever and brave cavallery-heroes in his early films. Has Benchles done anything comparable for sharks? I like the movie Jaws 1 + 2, I like the atmosphere in it, the village life it painted, and Roy Scheider (I like to see him in films), but I am also aware that it did quite some damage to the reputation of sharks. And I do not want to know how many sharks got slaughtered due to hysteria caused by this movie.

It's also important to consider that back in the day the knowledge about the Great Whites was limited, even today we still do not know everything about them, just like whale hunters never thought they would get outdated by coal and other stuff before running out of whales, and we could only measure the damage to the global whale population after the industry was already dead.
Hmmmm? Can anyone else trace a parallel? ![]()

IMO, the reputation of the sharks weren´t too great even before the film. Mostly because of the USS Indianapolis tragedy.
