I was playing the NATO EXWAR Exercise scenario, and got a weird angle so I ended up only being able to sink the CG. Usually I give up at this point, but I decided to experiment and see how well I'd do in the ensuing tail chase against the fast moving ESG.
I took it deep and cranked up to 18kts on the battery. This drew a lot of charge, so I couldn't continue the pursuit indefinitely. Eventually, I was able to catch up to the L-ships though, and shoot a couple more salvos, successfully damaging the LPD. "Ah ha!" I thought, "Maybe a tail chase isn't necessarily such a bad situation." By this time though the LPD was out of range again. So I figured I'd need to make one more dash. To do it, I'd need more juice in my batteries so I started to snorkel. Eventually I got frustrated with my lack of speed, though, and surfaced the boat. That was a dumb thing to do, and as soon as I showed up on their radar, a half dozen Harpoon ASCM came my way. Doh! I couldn't dive again in time and got killed. Oh well, I'll know better next time. I was wondering, though, how often do you guys find yourself snorkeling and trying to make up for speed like that? It seems like a lot of scenarios don't make that many demands on one in terms of submerged time and speed. |

The diesel electric boats are very limited, so a pursuit with it is very difficult if the target goes to more than your snorkeling speed. The best situation for this subs is when the target in incoming and it could stay at very low speed and waiting.Stay surfaced with a submarine is suicide since the end of the WWII
