i have a question, does the 16km also allow ships to spot u-boats at 16km? i read somewhere that the average spotting distance for a ship spotting a u-boat was actually only a few miles. i can believe this since we have huge houses on hills around where i live and when you are 5 miles away from them they are invisible or just a dot even with a 50 power binoculars. but there are no waves between me and those house. most ships are spotted at such distances not by their bulk but by their smoke. since u-boats made little smoke i doubt - with their paint schemes - that they could be spotted at great distance.

Redbrow:
I use the 16km mod and I can spot a ship up to 16km and smoke even further on clear days (less on fog conditions), but I can not be spotted unless I am under 4km (using a Type II at the moment).

Redwine:
The FOG that was mention was "suppose" to replace the fog that the 8km visibility uses to obscure the rest of the world and reduce the load on the video card. If you are using the 16km visibility mod, you will have light/medium/heavy fog show up that will limit how far you can really see just like the real world. What I am trying to say is that you do not need the artificial 8 km fog if you are using the 16km visibility mod because the game inserts the correct fog as you play.

I think (and I expect I'm wrong) that the original 16km fix removed all fog so it would work, which meant that if you had close-up fog in bad weather it wouldn't be there, so you could see ships in weird places.

Whether or not that was the case, there is a fix available on Terrapin's sight, and it may also be on the "Mods List" page here.

If you don't find it, I'll be glad to send you a copy, but it will take time as I have to copy it and bring it to the library to post.

Thanks Sailor...

When you say "16 km fix" are you refering to the 16 km mod ...i undestand ?

Or it is a fix for the mod ?

I will check the sites you mentioned, thanks.

16km Atmosphere Mod didn't remove fog (the grey stuff that shows up when the visibility is bad) but the haze of air on the horizon is removed (the dark part on the horizon that is due to the density of air seen over a distance).

If there is some sort of "fix," then I'm not aware of it.

with the Atmosphere mod V 2.0
edit:

Have to say o had some strange effects with the moon graphic with that scene.dat installed, but should work for you ,my installation was heavy modded that time...

btw, does anyone have an idea how to remove those ugly "square" that appears at external view (esp planes) with the 16km mods installed?
i mean (hard to discribe, my english is very limited) when you move the camera to a certain high level the horizon is cut off by an ugly effect. Or was it just my installation?
Unfortunately i can´t make a screenshot, SH3 in temporary non existant on my hdd.

I have the same problem, exact the same.
It happens too underwatwer when you increase too much the visibility underwater, you start up to see the boundaries of the surface texture, and a square appears, may be when you put the camera on a plane the same effect happen due to the increased visibility.

Hola redwine

I tried some time ago a fix for the 16 km mod but i had the weird black sun bug.

despite this i think that the fog is very correct in my setup.
i see a heavy fog in storms.and light fog in sunny days depending of the weather.

Unfortunately the game engine tied the heavy fog with the rain storms. in reality the fog could appears in calm waters.
