More RAM

So I never had that much trouble playing SHIII with my lowly 504 RAM. But with the MODs and junk, it sometimes ran slow.

Well, I'm far too cheap and poor to be spending bread on more RAM right now, but...

I have a old PC tower. And I was thinking maybe I could take that RAM and add it to mine.

I don't know much of a much about PCs, so feel free to laugh if this is really stupid. Just asking. Gosh.

Anywho, I reckon I can search and read about how to do it. I just was wondering if this can be done. Eh?

yes you can if you have a spare slot free, how much RAM is in you r old one??
all you do is take out the old RAM an basically put it in your current pc ya using and thats it really, the RAM stick is case you dont know is about 5 inch long and flat looks like a long retangle made up of squares, release the black fastner that holds the stick in place and just put it in the same place in your current p.c you should have like a series of slots that are colour coded mine are black and blue, dont know if yours are the same, if they are put it in the black one. thats the best i can describe it, if that doesnt help maybe someone else can give a better explanation

Thanks moony! Not sure how much RAM the old one is. It's older, but was top of the line when bought. So should be a bit.

No no no, it's not that simple.... don't get your hopes up just yet

The reason being that you can't mix RAM chips that have different speeds, which is probably your case, since you mention that one computer is older than the other. Be sure to check that before trying to mix them together. Just like different processors are designed to run at different speeds (with the newer ones being ever faster) so do different memory modules are designed to run at different speeds, with the newer ones being ever faster to keep up with the newer processors.

Check that before mixing your RAMs :hmm:

It is very importand to check the rams first .Look at their specs and see if they work on the same motherboard.See if the older one is SDRAM and if your curent pc supports it.SDRAM were top-notch in their days...
Also,one more thing:Ram is not that responsable for how your game actually runs .It does help,it is true,but not as much as a Video card or Procesor . Rams help you at loading times mainly-and that is good in a game like this with those horrible loading times,but if you want the game to run more smoothly then you should consider getting a GFX card instead.
Turn off the 'Event cam".That has the potential of causing some choppy-ness in the game.Also,you should try pressing shift+pgdown in the game (while you are playing in the u-boat not in the menu or at base)to lower software AA.

They didn't fit, actually. The other PC was even older than I thought. Wasn't much RAM there anyway.

I did notice though that my PC has two 256MB things. And with a little math that's 512. But my specs read as 504 and all games that require 512 (like, all my games do) say I'm below specs.

Not sure where that other 8MB is. Or are.

Anywho, thanks for the info guys. I think I'll just save up and upgrade to a Gig when I can.

I just warn you about mixing

1. the Ram sticks must be the same RAM type (DDR RAM , SDR RAM)
2. the best perfomance and without problems is the same Speed (MHZ example 333mhz)
3. your motherboard only supports 1 type of ram (see 1)

also Basic Ram sticks of 1024 isnt expensive these days , you could get good ones for just 80€ . just save a little and buy one.

or check Ebay for second hand ram sticks

Actually, if your motherboard supports Dual Channel DDR you're better off with 2x 512 MB

. It's a lot faster than a single stick of 1024 MB...

Also that firebird...but they are also Cheaper ! 2x 512 is cheaper then 1x 1024.
