Default Uboat Damage

Has anyone ever had a random breakdown of some part of the submarine like the engines for example. Ive never had this happen. Is it even possible?
I read somewhere that it happened to someone and they asked BdU for advice and command told them to return to base to get it fixed. This story was part of a patrol log though so im not sure if it was fiction or not, Could anyone clarify please?

I've never had it happen, i'vev never heard of it happening, and i dont think its possible. Not "random" breakdowns. Unless i get a REAL good Depth charging, or run into a subnet, my boat is usually 100% tip top, 99% of the time.

Yea, I dont think its modeled in SH3. It was in SH2. If you ran at flank for to long your engines could break down. Doesnt happen in this one though.

for many years ive played flight sims. warbirds, aces high, IL-2, wwiionline,
etc. any many times ive seen this come up. why not intriduce random damage on planes which did in reality have structural, engine or other,
problems. and everytime, after much discussion mind you, it was decided
it wasnt such a good idea after all. the reasons are many and varied.
Realism is good, to a point, but id be really pooed if my 5 hour (real time)
assignment was cut short, or even ended because a random induced
event which caused me to have to return to base, or got me sunk if it
happened at the wrong time.

my 0.2 cents anyways

then what? get towed back to Brest by a tug boat?

or in your unlucky, get towed back to Scapa Flow by a Tribal DD and spend the rest of the war building Church hill barriers

Thats why they call it a sim. Random breakdowns, accidents, sabotage. It was all part of the experience. I wish they would all be modelled with an option to enable or disable.
