Default We're not alone...

I was chasing down a merchant vessel it was about 5500m off of my port bow heading away from me. When all of a sudden it burst into flames!! There are explosions, I see stuff flying off of it. Mind you this is in grid AN84, about 60km SE of Lowenstafte.

GASP!! Another U-Boat patrolling my sector?!?!?! Stealing my tonnage?!?!?! I want names! I want ranks!

Does SHIII simulate other U-Boats on patrol or is this just a bug?

Or does the game simulate catastrophic events like boilers accidently exploding?

It was nice to know that I wasn't totally alone out here off the coast of England... I still want those names though!!

No, you are alone - except for the mines :hmm:

You will sometimes see ships destroyed by mines, or sink in heavy storms.

The game DOES simulate air attacks.

I've never yet seen one, except for the airstrikes against me

Wow, found another cargo ship (C2) dead in the water and on fire in the same general area. Hell, the only reason why I saw it were the flames (it was night time). So I traded one small merchant for a C2 (I used my last torpedo on it and finished it off).

If it is mines, that's a little scary because we where pretty far out. Seas where about 9 meters.

Nedlam,

I would mostly agree with the other guys' comments. I _have_ seen air attacks - but none that I ever called in, I don't htink. I was in teh mediterranean, in that base on Malta, port hunting (this was during my wild days as a uboat captain). Anyway, it was hairy, and patrol boats had closed in on me, passed through the walls of the port (breakwater, etc) ,and were DCing the $$%$ out of me. All of the sudden, the water around me, them and everywhere started exploding like DCs. I looked around, and it was swarms - swarms of german bombers. They sunk a tanker in port that I was about to torpedo, and they bombed the crap out of everything else - including coastal bunkers. Most of them were shot down by anti-air, so in addition to the bombing you had german planes and parts of german planes falling down on the port. It was beautiful. I haven't seen an airstrke since..but that might have done it for life.

About other subs - I've never seen any sign of one. BUT - in the bathtub this morning i was re-reading the Silent Hunter manual and found:

Page 27 - under send contact report :

"Sending contact reports will give precise enemy locations to the BdU....This can result in Luftwaffe or Kriegsmarine attacks!"

They may have been joshing us, because I've heard that AI subs can't submerge or fire torpedoes. But I'd love to live with fiction that this is possible.

KB

btw - U-173 is heading back from the Grand Banks right now with 4 passenger liners sunk, and a total of around 140k in tonnage (patrol 13, IXC, oct '42)

Your sub is indeed alone unless you are running U-boat War Ace (Wolfpack).

I have had the Luftwaffe show up several times in the Norway area, without being called, and sink ships I was chasing.
