Default Any idea where the recovered half of the K-129 is?

I'm sure the US still has the piece it recovered. Does anyone have any info about it?

america still has it down as classified

some tid bits

submarine squadron commander of K129 was rear admiral Victor degaylo

submarine was a golf I SSB

had three diesel engines as well as electric motors

sank some 300 miles off its assigned course

when the claw found her one missile was found to be missing

the submarine sank in about 10,000 feet of water (unsure on this)

the americans recoverd 6 russian bodys

and the americans did not get any weapons code books or radio messages from the boat

and only the front part made it back to the surface and was found to be radio active

il get more for you soon though

the submarine has probly been cut up for scrap along time ago but if it was radio active it could have been buried some where in the desert maybe ? who knows

I don't really buy that the sub broke into pieces while being recovered. I think the US had the entire sub, but didn't want the Soviets to know that thier codes, missle tech, ect. had been compromised. The CIA realized the story would leak out, and decided on the story that was released.

I dont want you guys to lose too much sleep over this, so I confess: It's in my backyard and is bugging the hell out of the woman I live with. I planned on using it as a simulator environment, but anyway.. you're welcome to come and pick it up. Tia.

Hmm, I get it, Sixpack is a retired CIA AGENT!!! That explains his vast knowledge of military and world affairs! One question. Is it just the piece, or the whole thing?

later reports from the soviets comfirm that K129 broke into pieces but if there is the possiblity that the americans raised the entire submraine then the code books would have decintergrated due to the water.

even if america did get the code books some codes are unique to each boat making no two codes the same.

the fleet codes would have been changed immediatly incase of defection so the codes would have been useless anyway

on top of that K129 was obsolete they had better platforms both at sea and in the making.

realy surprises me that they didnt attempt to raise K219 or Komsomolets

I think after the K129 incident, the Soviets quietly warned that they wouldn't allow any attempts to raise the K219 or Komsomolets. I'm sure there were listening devices left in near the 2 wrecks, along with periodic patrols to the sites. Probably with a few threats thrown in for good measure.

the russians commission the ocean research vessel Kelvdysh and her two mir submarines (ones used on the film titanic) to film the komsomolets wreck however K219 is deemed to be in such an unfit state it cannot be raised and is of no intrest to any powers.

bear in mind K219 was about 15 years old when she sank so getting to the end of her life and not of much use despite another 33 were active at the time.

komsomolets was virtualy new when she sank and she sank in fairly deep water and has a hatch open so ROV could possibly enter the wreck and find items of value onboard still (good possiblity that the captain sabotaged all the code books and logs before she went down as did captain of K8)

the komsomolets is routinely moniterd by russian warships and that must indicate that there has to be a listning device there, the norwiegens have asked several times to visit the wreck but were declined but once.

I thought Russian code books were treated to disolve in sea water.

not to my knowlage they found documents on the komsomolets 5 years after she sank so i doubt it and anyway it be stupid if they did cause the con is under the sail and in the bearnts sea water comes over the sail and down into the con (some times anyway) this is a problem for even the typhoons.

so if it splashed around the con and got onto them books they be very stuck to know whats what
