Default I M H O

In my HUMBLE opinion, "realistic" is a sonarman that hears contacts, a navigator that plots them and a weapons officer who sets the torps up for you. I doubt many submarines see the commander running back and forth from the periscope to the hydrophone to the torpedo station to the map table, etc...

More likely, people are doing all these things as he calls out the orders. Im pretty sure its been said before, but after reading a few things on here, I thought id say it again. It just FEELS realistic for me to click the "fire" button on the Weapons officer commands as if im yelling "Los"... and he fires the torps. When I look at the map, I see a contact drawn on there by a sailor taking cues from the sonar contacts...

Much less multitasking for this captain! Though sometimes I DO like to jump on the hydrophone and listen. I just wish there were key commands for telling weapons officer how I want my toprs set... That would be nice.

No sim is perfect. And never can.
Try to agree with it.

Rotluchs sets a good point...

I wish the A.I. were a little more competent. But since we are just being wishful and unrealistic, I guess us kaleun's will have to make due with being more competent.

In a manner of speaking you are quite correct. Furthermore, "Realism" is a matter of perception. I would say though, that the Captain is rather expected to know how to perform each function on board the boat in case of casualties or other problems that could arise. However, yes... as the Captain your crew is assigned to perform their duties as you wish.

As long as you are having fun... keep doing it. Beware though, eventually you will be bitten by the bug that makes you want to know more and do more.

In the meantime.... SINK 'EM ALL!!! (but watch out for friendlies and neutrals.)

Cheers mate!

Only if they spoke in the clear which 99% of the time they didn't, for that very reason. Also Radio traffic was kept to a minimum so that RDF units couldn't get a Fix on your position. Remember Morse Code ? Well most of the radio traffic was coded Morse Code. Besides it was only till the latter stages of the war that "Walkie Talkie's" came about and their range was rather low.

Morse Code - HF
Walkie Talkie's - VHF

HF - long range (can go global)
VHF - line of sight. (needs repeaters to get long range)

BUT - IF u didn't understand the coded msg, you knew it wasn't 1 of your's

I don't see myself as the commander, so it doesn't impact me in the same way. I see myself as the crew's inspiration. I jump into any crew position whenever the crew needs me. Personally, I wish the developers had put in a commander figure so that we wouldn't get the idea that we were 'only' the commander. After all, we jump into the LIs shoes, and the WO. Why not the commander too? Where is the commander when I'm at the LI's station - does he just disappear? When you think about it, having an invisible captain when it's possible to take over your subordinates' bodies doesn't make much sense.

lol hey nobody take me wrong, im not trying to play the "I play the game right you play the game wrong" game, im just sayin is all, that I like to envision myself as captain, thats how I play. Its fun. I give instruction to the crew. Its my job to get the boat in position to sink tonnage. I keep weapons, navigaion, sonar, radio, crew status in mind as i plan how my belovid boat will send ships to the bottom. Thats all im sayin. I say the game does a damn good job at letting me sink into that fantasy. Thats all.

... speaking of which... The other day I was sailing along... minding my own business...

and Yiddish morse code let to the destruction of 6000 tons of knitting supplies desparately needed for the defense of Uzbekistan....

My navigator flawlessly plotted the course of the Yiddish vessel... with a pencil... in a lovely shade of graphite gray.
