I've been trying a career in a IXC a few times now but find I'm not given nearly enough fuel to get to my patrol area and back
![]() I have the MAN engine upgrade, full effiency in the engines, made sure the battery is not in recharge mode and the fuel tank is in working order. This gives me ~20,000km at the slowest speed, but I keep getting sent to NY and near Tampa, which are both about a 20,000km return trip ![]() I have to draw the shortest course possible, go at slow speed, and avoid going fast to chase contacts. What do the rest of you IX commanders do?? |

Well with the rise in fuel costs these days, it's no surprise that people are somehow syphoning fuel from your U-boat...Virtually of course!

You need the refuel option, look for it in the upcoming Harbor Mod.

Try running at ahead one third, it seems to extend range somewhat, or at least it does in my II-A

Get rid off MAN, ahead slow, submerged in bad weather. Or if you want to keep MAN, set appropriate speed by knots not these 'Ahead 1/3' and such. Long trips are all about fuel management and taking the correct routes. My longest trip to east coast/Carbibbean took three months and I still had 25% fuel left back at home (in IXB).

![]() It would be very fine if the BDU installs a petrol station in the United States, where kaleuns can refuel with half the costs.... ![]() ![]() |

Set your speed to 9-10 knots. Quote:
The optimal speed varies with different types of engine upgrades. Just try different speeds and ask your Nav officer max range at current speed for finding the maximum range. |

This question also brings up the issue of map projections. The shortest course may not be a straight line on your map, but I'm not sure if the sim accurately represents this. When plotting a course to New York, for example, it might be interesting to first set a straight course (on the map) with one waypoint half-way between. Then drag the middle waypoint north and watch the distance to the end waypoint. The total distance should decrease until you find a minimum value. Doing this with multiple waypoints should allow you to find a 'great circle' course between points (again, if the sim accurately does this).
I will have to try this tonight, and I will report back. |
