Default What a patrol...or is it an old bug?

Hi All
2nd mission after my reincarnation (must remember to burn some incense ). Have run into 2 large convoys, total kills some 15 ships - mostly C2, some T2 and a single T3 + some smaller vessels. BdU must be HAPPY!!

Out of all ammo and on my way home, I started wondering about the lack of escorts :hmm: . The first convoy had only a Corvette, the second had none!

So tell me: Wasn't that old bug with missing escorts cured in 1.4b???

If it was early on in the war, then I don't think it would have been a bug. At the beginning, many convoys didn't have any escorts. U-boats would have a field day with them.

Hi,
Yes it was early in the war. Nov -39.
Anyway, here's the tally - 15 ships sunk: 6 C2, 2 T2, 2 T3. The rest Coastal Merchants, except for 1. Total tonnage: 94278

Not bad for 1 mission. I will definately stick with type VII - shorter trips, more fun than type IX.

The reason for forming convoys being that if a bunch of ships is together in one place, u-boats have to find that one place to kill ships, and the rest of the ocean is much emptier.

The first 2 convoys I attacked in 39 only had 1 escort each.
In early 40, I started seeing 2 escorts per convoy, then in
mid 40s, it went to 3. Now in the late 40s, I am seeing 4
escorts per convoy so I think its just the game or mods doing
the historical thing right....

Hi all,
Yes, I konw that the early convoys did have insufficient escorts. But there was a confirmed bug causing even fewer escorts to be spawned. AFAIR the bug didn't allow escorts older than the oldest ship in the convoy - or something like that! I did a search, but came up with nothing.

So do anyone remember this bug, and if it was ever fixed?

Hello Svenks!
What mods do you use? If you use the stock campaign.file, there is a bug that made early escorts to spawn in same place, that made them disappear. So that's one reason for seeing convoys without or with few escorts.

There where some mods fixing this and at the same time reduced single contacts to 20%. You can read about it in this sticky: http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=32810

Have you tried Improved convoys? A great mod!

Hi Rulle.

No mods - a few tweaks, thats all.
I know about the 'Too Close' spawing bug, but that's not the one I'm talking about.

EDIT: Or is it?? In the sticky you mention, there is something about dates too. Requires closer reading, but I'm at work now...

Anyway, I'll look into your suggestions. Guess i't about time I did some modding too

Thanks

Vanilla SH3 even with the official patches installed leave much
to be desired in the campaigns. The mods (pick & choose wisely)
can make a major difference in the reality of the patrols....

Real life wouldn't the convoy scatter though? SH3 early war convoy no escort they just stay together and take their hit one by one

In real life they would but it would be a programming nightmare
to try to make them do it successfully in SH3...
