It"s 03/014/1940 i have entered scapa flow and the Carrier Illustrious is moored there i have but one chance for a salvo against her before i have to escape. Lots of desroyers and corvettes patrolling.
The water is 4 meters under keel in a submerged Sub very shallow. My quistion is what running dept do i set my torpedoes at ? Or what tactics do you use for this situation ? ![]() Thanks in advance ? |

Use the recognition manual to see the draft of the carrier, then put the torpedo`s running depth 1m under the draft depth.
That`s what I would do. Hope you sink the bstard! |

Also, if you are going to fan your torps... set one degree of spread to increase the chance of multiple hits...
... of course if you miss you may get multiple misses. |

Yeah it is not easy trying to do a hit and run at Scapa or Loch Ewe. If you can manage to avoid the DD's, nets and mines to get in (and you are lucky enough to find a high value target, you then have a 'mare to get out because due to the depth there is no where to go.
I have been to Scapa and Loch Ewe only a handful of times but never actually found anything. Just attacked a moored DD and then got nailed trying to escape by the angry DD's as I tryed to get away. I dunno how Capital ships/Carriers are moored but I would suggest sending your spread from max range to give you a few mins head start on the DD's (this would depend on positioning though). Choose bad weather as well.

If you are using auto targetting all you have to do is go at it about 500-900 meters away and then at a 90 degree AOB, and then click on the word "Ship" where it says "Ship: Illustrious Fleet Carrier" then the ship will appear in the recognition manual with boxes around the vulnerable points. There will be 3 that will almost kill it automatically, "Aft ammo bunker", "bow ammo bunker" and "fuel bunker" click on one of those and it will be highlighted and then fire your torp, it should hit and kill it in one shot. Also you have to have it locked. If you are using manual targetting, totally disregard this message.

Hi
I threw a salvo of 3 torpedoes (I was in type IIB) from 550 mt distance. it was daytime, and 2 of the 3 torps were gas powered, so the bubble trail was visible. maybe for this reason the Illustrious suddenly starded to move, accelerating from 0 to 8 kts in a few seconds (quite funny, if not impossible). one of my torps hitted anyway, ripping off propellers a stopping the carrier. so I had time to reload and finish it off. I didn't care much of torp depth, used default. it was end '40 and DDs didn't trouble me much. I was able to get away (northwest) in silent running without being detected. I repeated the same in another campaing, and still the Carrier started to move forward as soon as torps left my boat. annoying and maybe a little unrealistic, a moored aircraft carrier cannot put to sail (8 kts) in 60 seconds I believe... bye ludwig |
