Well given the little discussion on the Greek merchant marine I thought it might be good to work out the whole issue of how and when sides are defined. It seems there was at least one error, or perhaps some wrong information somehow crept in. Look at these threads.
http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=42591 http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=42798 So I think I showed on the second thread Greek merchants were not really protected...unless I suppose they were sailing among the Greek islands and then they were probably small vessels or fishers and u-boats did not patrol there anyway. I did a quick perusal of the defsides.cfg and found most are what I expected, although I have a slight question mark over Yugoslavia...are there even Yugoslav merchants in the game? I never heard of any and know though there was a government in exile, the various republics were treated differently: Croatia was an Axis partner, Serbia was occupied. I "think" as Croatia had most of the coast line the merchant navy would be under their control in any case so would definitely be Axis. What was the reasoning for changing side defs from the stock...if any? What sides did appear in convoys and what not? Would it be possible for u-boats left in the Med at Toulon to attack Italian merchant shipping? Did it happen? Sorry for the questions just want to examine this. |

I've read the threads about the Greek shipping as to what side was what etc, could you not make 2 Greek sides, e.g. Greek1 and Greek2 so one lot could be Axis and the other Allies?

Well, what would be the point? First I don't know how to do that. Second, having studied the occupation, I really don't think there was much traffic in Greek waters other than fishing boats and light craft. But this is a moot point...no one in the game would spend time hiding among the Greek islands either before or after the invasion....but in the Med yes. So I would ask why not do the same for France, or Norway for that matter. Unless you can prove there was a lot of Greek traffic in Greece during the occupation. Then where would the Axis Greek ships be and the Allied ones? Seems too complicated, what do the other Op team members think?
