Problem: Graphical Flashes

When I try to play the game runs fine... except that the screen flashes every second or so. Its a quick black flash.. maybe at the speed of an eyeblink. Sometimes I notice a darker band running horizontally across the screen along with the flash.

this is going to cause a seizure if i play for more than 5 minutes.

how can I make it go away?

The only other game I have noticed this occuring on is old old old school Xcom, if that helps.

Windows XP sp 1
ATI Radeon 9600xt 128
1gig ram (not sure specifically what kind)
