I am on patrol near Ireland when I get a reprot of a enemy convoy, headed sw, so I head towards it, weather is atrocious, anyway I have the speed set high when all of a sudden I am taking damage, what the !!!! it's a Clemson class dd, he opened fire I dived and he depth charged me once which did no damage then he dissapeared, next I sight a large T3 tanker, but no time for a shot, he passes me and I spot another shape looming up out of the rain, it's another T3, I am close 392mts, engins full astern, ranger out to 470mts , fire, the fish hits him and breaks in half

SHIII really is modeled wrong on Neutral ships. Don't feel bad if you go into your Basic.gfg file and change the renown section, NEUTRAL= (to a plus number like .25) so it would be
NEUTRAL=.25 Yes, Hitler did change his mind on the subject several times. But tha basic terms were if a Neutral was running in an enemy convoy or escorting an enemy convoy it was fair game. If running alone it was hands off. I changed mine and leave lone Neutrals alone. But if they'er in an enemy convoy they'er mine.

I recall reading somewhere that lonely neutral ships that run without lights at night was also fair game.

As per Hitlers Directive #5 of Sept. 30 1939 Trade War will in general be waged in accordance with Prize Law with the following exceptions: Merchant ships and troopships definitely established as being hostile may be attacked without warning. This also applies to ships sailing without lights in waters round England. Merchantmen which use their radio transmitters after being stopped will be fired upon. Attacks on passenger ships, or large ships which obviously carry considerable numbers of passengers in addition to cargo, are still forbidden. |

Wasn't it the norm (rule?) for neutral ships in WW1 and 2 to have large flags or other indications of neutrality painted on the hull, with floodlights on them at night? If that could be modeled in SH, that'd be so cool.

@bill clarke,
If it was a Clemson class DD it was American if SH3 modeled it right, but I'll bet your renown was cut when you got back to port for sinking a neutral even if BdU said "Keep up the good work". ![]() Edit: I stand corrected ( ![]() http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...hip/dd-186.htm DD-186 Clemson A total of 156 Clemson class destroyers were laid down between April 1918 and September 1920. They were a repeat of the Wickes (DD-75) class destroyers but with 35% more fuel capacity (375 tons) which increased endurance to 2500 miles at 20 knots, or 4900 miles at 15 knots. They were fitted with four boilers; Normand, Yarrow, or White-Forster and geared turbines; Parsons, Curtis, or Westinghouse. Many were placed in reserve in 1921-22 after the need for them had passed. On 8 September 1923, seven destroyers of this class ran hard aground and were wrecked at Honda Point, California due to navigational error. Sixty-four were scrapped in accordance with the London Naval Treaty of 1930; these being dismantled 1930-36. Six served with the Coast Guard in 1930-34. In late 1940, twenty of these destroyers were loaned to Britain and Canada under the Lend Lease Act. Eight of these did not survive the war. In 1937 four Clemson class destroyers were converted to destroyer minelayers (DM) and in 1940 eight more were converted to high speed destroyer minesweepers (DMS) and thirteen to seaplane tenders (AVD/AVP). A further seven were converted to high speed transports (APD) in 1942-43. The Reuben James (DD-245) of this class was the first US warship to be sunk by hostile action during World War Two; she was torpedoed by German submarine U-562 on 31 October 1941 with the loss of 115 men. Ten more ships of this class would be lost to enemy action and six accidentally during World War Two. The class was withdrawn from service in 1945-46 following the war. And as far as neturals running lights at night is not modeled in SH3 ( might be an idea for someone to mod ? :hmm: ) so I guess if you want your renown cut just sink'em. ![]()

i'm of the mind that if it floats... sink it...
that's my job... that's what i do best... ![]() i've even fired on vessels flying the German flag... those British are verrry tricky you know... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() anything on top of the water in my patrol sector is considered a target... maybe that's why i didn't have that 1 billion renown when i wanted to step up to a XXI ![]() --Mike |

From what I've seen, I can sail right past neutral ships...warships included in broad daylight even and they will not attack....
UNLESS... You put a shell or torpedo into a neutral ship in the area. Then they are more than happy to join the hunt for you! ![]()

First time I accidentally sank a neutral, I was afraid of the reception I would get from HQ when I returned to port. But, except for the effect on renown, there was no 'punishment', and the tonnage gets counted. Since then, I still try to avoid it, but don't worry about it as much. Besides, neutrals 'hiding' in an enemy convoy are not reallt that neutral!

I only atack convoy ocean liners because they are likely to cary soldiers, I will not atack single ships because of the civilians onboard.
