Default U-538 takes its place at the bottom...

A veteran of 10 war patrols, this Type IX-C was engaged in a convoy battle somewhere in the vicinity of BE-31 in February of 1943. She had torpedoed three ships, with two tankers sunk and a C2 listing badly to starboard.

She managed to escape the escorts during the initial attack, relying on the ensuing havoc created by panic-induced zigging and foul weather to drop behind the convoy and prepare for another attack the next evening.

Alas, it was not to be. At 0800, U-538 surfaced and plotted an end-around course to gain position before nightfall. What she didn't know was that an entire squadron of Sunderlands had been dispatched, having been informed of her last known course.

At 0830, the first Sunderland dove out of the clouds and caught U-538 unawares. The boat did not have sufficient time to dive or man her flak guns before a stick of bombs, perfectly placed, ripped her hull apart. She was gone within seconds, with all crew lost.

A toast to the men of U-538...fair winds and following seas

(Rewind to September 1, 1939)...

U-48, a Type VIIB U-boat, deployed for her first patrol today...

FAdmiral...love your sig photo. That's a classic of USS Robalo being dumped in the Manitowoc River in Wisconsin...the river was so narrow they couldn't launch them stern-first like they did at Portsmouth and Electric Boat.

Don't ya' hate when that happens?!

I lost my type IXB last weekend - over 23 patrols, into 1944. Shot down a lone PBY on the way out of Lorient. Then stayed on the surface to try and run beyond the 12m deep shallows - but - less then 20 minutes later, the entire flying boat compliment of coastal command showed up, and well, no need for gory details.

From my sig, for the crew of U-538:

"Here endlessly the white waves burst and foam,
the gray gulls cry and the cormorant dips,
down by the bleached bones of forgotten ships,
and all is alone with God and the sea."

The crew of U46 salutes the fallen crew of U538, and wishes luck to the crew of U48.

All of this despite the fact that U46 is on patrol in November of 1939, and would therefore be unaware of the future events of February 1943. Furthermore, they would be aware of the future operations of U48, rendering the wishing of luck useless. As these facts are making everyone's heads hurt, U46 will be diving to 30 meters, where asprin will be distributed to the crew.

Nothing like a paradox to screw with a boot crewman's head...

But jesus, i wish there were gory details in game.

I hate how the game just ENDS when you die.

CRASH SMASH BANG JAOL HERR KALOIN BANG SMASH SMASH VASA BOMB BANG BANG-we hope you enjoyed playing silent hunter 3 press escape to continue.

It should go to external view, and you should see your hull impolding, bubbles, debirs, and you sinking to the bottom.

Its such an anticlimax.

That would be nice yes.I would like the possibility to order the crew to abandon the boat..Last career ended with the boat badly flooding. The boat was going down fast.I managed to get it back up from over 100m deep to the surface. There would have been time to save my men before it went down again..But now i just have to use my imagination.

Both of those situations could be done quite well with movie clips i'd expect.
