Default U64 lost - dec 24 1940

I´m not feeling good.
Just lost my boat. And it was my fault.
First i took her into shallow waters to chase a convoy ( )

After hiting 2 C3´s with all tubes fired (none sunk btw) i tried to sneak away without reloading (only ~70 meters of water under keel)
but they detected me. 4 escorts started to encircle the boat.

After 1/2 hour taking DC´s i did a tactical mistake and got a direct hit.

It was christmas day.

So my good trusted type IXB - U64 is no more. To make that for sure i wiped out immediately the /My Documents/SH3 folder.
Captain Karl Ranseier and his brave crew have gone on eternal patrol after 10 succesful missions.

i´ve played that career with caution and avoided every uneccesary risk until that last big mistake to go into the irish sea.
I was never in big trouble the whole career and saw 2 (!) lonely fighters in 10 patrols.

So the game felt sometimes too easy to me and i always wondered what would it like in the later years.
I´ve learned someting today, i just survived cause i played very casual and did no stupid things. A little mistake and you´ll be (perhaps) history. Even in early war.

I have to be more cautious in the next career.
This time it will be a type 7!
new boat, new crew, starting in jan 1940 and i´ll try out that new sh3 commander
feeling slighly better now...

The men of U-48 (currently sailing near Loch Ewe, after a report of a Nelson-class BB docking there within a few days) raise a toast to U-64. Tube 1 will be dedicated to U-64's crew...let's hope the eel hits something vital

I am now in a Type 7B and it is Nov. 1940. Base is Lorient.
I am on my 8th patrol and I have been very careful and lucky
so far. I only attack merchants with excorts in 130 meters or
more. I patrol mainly in BF13 because the activity there is
very good. Lone merchants heading NE to England and lots
of convoys heading WSW away from England. All are British.
See many patroling DD's too but no planes as of yet. Maybe
in 41 when the bigger aircraft come available. My last convoy
sighted was 16 merchants with 4 escorts. I only had 1 torp
left so I just got close enought to sight them & sent a contact
message. Not risking 4 escorts after me for firing 1 eel (being
my usual smart self) As I was skirting around the starboard
rear escort (4 stacker), I had him sighted so I could monitor his movements. Suddenly he increased speed from the usual
patroling 10 kt up to 20, then 25, then30, then 35 (flank).
I thought for sure he had seen me but the distance was increasing, not decreasing. He was heading south back to the
convoy. Now the only reason I can think of for him to do that was
an attack on the convoy!! Had my contact message produced
some kind of abstracted results??? Very Interesting Indeed !!!
This was the first time in all the patrols I sent a contact message.
Is there another element working in this game? I'm sure none
of the mods did this or the modders would have mentioned it.
I use patch 1.4b and RUB 1.41 and the rest are just tiny mods
for visual purposes only. I have NEVER witnessed a DD go to
flank and stay there unless he was after me??? This one stayed
at 35 kts. for a good 5 min before he slowed to 20 kt and
changed course to SSW as he got near the merchants....

Don´t make such stupid mistakes like i did.

Make sure to come back unharmed to share your knowlegde about our boats and the enemy to new skippers.
We´ve already lost too many good and combat proven boats...

Kapintänleutnant Maximilian Wiethoff and the entire crew of U-52 mourns the loss of U-64. Sie sind nicht umsonst vor dem Feinde geblieben. Für den Sieg!

This 1 eel only is getting really weird. I have spent 6 days now
looking for that 1 merchant to deliver this last eel too. Needless
to say, I have yet to come across it. BUT (get this) I just came across my 3rd convoy !!! Will someone get thoese darn convoys
out of my way and give me a single merchant? At this point, I am
heading back to Lorient to end the patrol, 1 eel or not. If I see
a merchant on the way back, all the better. It's almost like the
lone merchants won't take BF13 anymore because I have been
sinking them right & left. All these convoys have had 4 escorts
so they are starting to get wise to me. (I wish the game actually
WAS that smart, without cheating of course)......

Searching for u-boats at slow speed and going to flank to return to the convoy / reach the next search position makes sense to me.

U-64 will be missed... I and my crew will pay a 2 minute silent in respect.

PS: since I'm not at home, I don't know my kapt name, one can only speak as I. Sorry for that...

U-101's crew will miss their comrades. I always stop and think if I am making a stupid move before I make a comitmant. You have to think of the crew and your boat.

Shallow waters = danger!

I hardly ever engage enemies when in shallow waters...only when the targets are too juicy to pass up.

Anyway I wish you and your crew the best of luck in your next career!
