Default A New Pope is Elected

The new pope is Robert Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV - the first American pontiff to be elected leader of the Catholic Church

Prevost, 69, is greeted with huge cheers from thousands gathered in St Peter's Square

"May peace be with all of you," he says from the Vatican balcony

Chicago-born Prevost is seen as a reformer and worked for many years as a missionary in Peru before being made an archbishop there.

Better chance that it will piss Triump, because it is an open secret that Trump as well as the camp of "Christian nationalists wanted not only a US-American pope but also some American being more conservative and thus more supportive for his policy-making.Vance colelcted criticism from the alst poepe at least twice in the past motnbhs and already during the first Trump reign when Vance was not yet on the stage. This US government hardly has shed a single tear over Francis having passed away.

From what they said about Leo on TV it seems the Trumponistas got exactly the political opposite of what they may have hoped for, he is more left.leaning, and probbaly congtinues on the kath of his predecessor. Not enough with being "liberal", he is even an American but not MAGA -American but possibly quite opposite to MAGA and nationalism!

Leo maybe proves to be the anti-thesis to Trump. And maybe that is why he was made Pope. A living provocation.

I hope he works out well for those who subscribe to that religion.

A pope is an international religious man.
It doesn't matter what he's nationality is...
You think because he is American, he will suddenly act in benefits of the US ?

The thing i really hated yesterday during that mass public in the Vatican, Is all the flags that they showed...

Christianity, jews or islam, or any other religion. Has noting to do with a specific country.
A religion is for the entire world. Doesn't matter what nationality or race you are.

Well, we could also smell Joey Biden and the Democrats behind this pick. There is a separation of church and state in our constitution. So his election is something the followers of the Catholic religion will have to deal with. Not the President of the United States. And you seemed so pised off Why? Remember Democracy is all inclusive across the Planet.Right? OH damn except for Ukraine, Yes no elections for them. Let the all of the Democratic countries look at Ukraine. If your politicians drag you into a war, Your Democracy and freedom and religion comes to a quick end. It's now about their Political survival. And no religion will interfere with that.

What's with this papal preoccupation with the name of Leo? This new pope is the 14th Leo. You'd think half that number would have been enough. He should have kept his real name. "Pope Bob" would have been cool.

The pope is basically a religious Caesar like all royal ... with the same name as a former royal ... they adopt they add a number. Popes have often chosen the names of their immediate or distant predecessors out of respect or admiration and to signal the desire to follow in their footsteps and continue the most relevant pontificates. Pope Leo XIII, served from 1878 to 1903.

I'm amazed he didn't select Adrian VII; after the first English-born English speaking Pope Adrian VI (1154-1159).
