Default Having trouble with understanding layers

So I have played this game off and on for a while but never got super deep into and would mostly just create simple missions in the editor. The thing is with most of the scenarios if I start near then enemy they will immeidately ping me and kill me. I know there is a layer where the temperature changes and I think you stay just below that line but I have never been able to understand how to calculate what depth the layer is so I know what depth to run at. Also what is the max you can run something like the seawolf without being detected. I usaully keep to 5kts but with their ping that doesn't seem to matter.

So what the best way to understand how the layer works so you can remain harder to detect?
