They showed the movie "The Enemy Below" on TCM last night. I saw it once a long time ago. But now watching it with the perspective of playing Silent Hunter 3 and SH4, put it in a new light. An excellent movie. They got a lot of things right about the sub and destroyer battle. The ending got a little crazy but the maneuvers and the sonar and the depth charges all seemed pretty good. And in 1957 (when it was made), they still had access to gun destroyers that looked more or less like WW2 ships. The depth charge explosions looked real too (at the surface) and not like Hollywood special effects. Kurt Juergens made a good u-boat Kaleun, although they did not use that term. But they showed respect for the German commander and sailors and captain and did not demonize them. Except they only spoke English.
It would make a good double-bill with Das Boot. ![]() |

Try "The Cruel Sea" from 1953 for escort tactics and equipment. They used a couple of real corvettes for filming, one of which had actually taken part in the sinking of two uboats.
And yes, British people actually spoke like that. Especially if they were actors ![]() |
