Default Bedbug panic sweeps Paris

A plague of bedbugs has hit Paris and other French cities, provoking a wave of insectophobia and raising questions about health and safety during next year's Olympic Games.

That's broadly how the phenomenon has been described in the French - and now international - news media.

In part it is true. But in another part it isn't.

What is the case is that the number of bedbug sightings has increased over the last weeks - and that that upward trend goes back several years.

"Every late summer we see a big increase in bedbugs," says Jean-Michel Berenger, an entomologist at Marseille's main hospital and France's leading expert on les punaises.

"That is because people have been moving about over July and August, and they bring them back in their luggage.

"And each year, the seasonal increase is bigger than the last one."

In Paris, to the long-standing fear of infestation felt by flat-dwellers (one in 10 of whom have experienced bedbugs in the last five years, according to official figures) have been added new sources of angst.

Reports that punaises have been recently seen in cinemas have not been proven, but are taken seriously. Likewise claims that people have been bitten on trains.

And now both Paris City Hall and the President Emmanuel Macron's government are calling for action. It is a measure of how seriously they take the issue - and of how they need to protect the image of Paris ahead of the 2024 games - that they are not dismissing the bedbug panic as a social media invention.

Back in my poverty days, I was well familiar with Bed Bugs.

It did not matter how clean I was, my neighbors were what mattered.

Nasty critters and very hard to get rid of

Cockroaches are like that too. An infestation in one apartment means a quick spread to the rest of them and the older the building the quicker the spread.

Tourists? Right, couldn't be those pesky illegal aliens sneaking across borders with different cleanliness norms since they'll never be integrated into society. I'm expecting a wave of all kinds of nasty bugs crawling or viral in the new world order.

As overpopulation keeps crowding us ever closer together more of that stuff is pretty much inevitable.

With a wide open border, and illegal aliens not held to the same standards that they force us to meet of course it is. My friend did it all the legal way which is the way it should be. I've got no problem with immigration being done the legal way, in fact double or triple normal legal immigration would be fine, but not this Biden $hit show. Person bringing the other person here responsible for them, not the taxpayer.

I don't think illegals are any dirtier than us home grown Americans. When was the last time you ever heard of an immigrant hoarder?

I'm sure many of them are cleaner than me, but I'm also sure there are diseases like TB coming over the border, and nobody is even checking it, and it doesn't even have to be. They'll just use it as a weapon against us later. Sorry, two more weeks to flatten whatever curve comes next meanwhile they gain ever more power and the people lose even more of their power
