Back in the days, I liked him. I started to dislike him (the music he made) when he started to sing in German (by using phonetic transcription, he did not speak German well enough to understand what he was singing), and that was cheesy "Schlager". His popularity in Germany ouclassed that in other countries, but the German singing I found kitschy because the musical quality and the texts went down the hill, imo. I still have a CD by him I occasionally play, and some of his older songs I still like today. And I still think he wasa a really good singer when he kept it to English. Streets of London. Durham Town. New World in the Morning. Old Town. - He had quite some very good songs in his book.

He was on the radio in the 1970ies all the time, my father also had a few cassettes with recordings. The melodies were nice, although at that time I preferred rock 'n roll of any kind.
Rest in peace Mr Whittaker, those were good times ![]()
