Hydrophone questions

Is there a guide to the basic operation of the Hydrophone? One that would explain how it works and when to vary the settings?

The main hydrophone station has dials for "low/high pass" and "Gain", but there is no explanation in the manual for what they do and how/when to use them. The "2" interface also has two dials with "khz" listed. Are these the same or different?

so far, I have been waiting until the AI sonarman calls out a contact and I then focus on that contact, it is easy enough then to hear it and refine the noise, but not clear what settings to use to maximise long range detection.
