Default I am a new user

I am new to subsim.
I cut my teeth on silent service by micro prose back in the 80s.
Then got back in to it with silent hunter 3. now trying to get back again with SH4. I am feeling really confused with the whole thing. i bought SH3, 4 and 5.
Purchased from ubisoft and DLed directly i think. Trying to play SH4 but with what i watch on youtube this is not the software i have. the link i have goes through uplay://launch/293/0 to play the game. there is no EXE. the graphics and features are not the same as watching wolfpack and other videos on youtube. the talk about Mods a such are all greek to me. can anyone tell me what the deal is? not sure how to proceed. i also have several computers in the house. win 7, 8, 10 etc... Not sure what system to play on or what software to buy/ download etc... where does one start? any advise would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard d0nbr0wn1ng

I try to avoid Steam and UBIsoft "uplay" (now "Ubisoft connect") like the plague, but now since you bought it it should at least work – if the game is installed on your HD you should be able to find it, *.exe and all.

I always bought the DVDs so i do not know how to help - with "Steam" a game is usually installed in the "Steam" directory, the same will be true for this Ubisoft connect procedure.

Problem is that official updates are usually automatically filled in when you buy a game, but there will almost always be problems with inofficial mods.

Greetings, Catfish

Welcome, first of all.

I have played SH3 and SH4 on both Win7 and Win10 with no problems, and I assume you would have no problems with Win8.

No extra software is really needed to play the game, but you should look up in Windows what graphics card you have and download the latest drivers if they are out of date. Not necessary, just a good idea.

Mods are MODifications - changed game files that improve the standard, off-the-shelf (stock) game...different subs, more ships, better textures, better missions, and so on.

You should also google JSGME (Jonesoft Generic Mod Enabler) and download it so you can play the game with mods once you read the instructions. The great thing about JSGME is you can easily remove a mod through JSGME if you don't like it or if it causes trouble...JSGME will back up the files for you.
You said the graphics don't look like Wolfpack345's so I assume you at least got the game working? Keep in mind Wolfpack345 has a heavily modded game, so his graphics are much better than SH4 with no changes (unmodded).

Most mods are here:

https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/dow...hp?do=cat&id=2

There are also a few on moddb.com.

Personally, I would run thru SH4's tutorials before adding mods; you say you have played SH3 so I think after a few tries you will probably get the hang of it. Although many Sh4 controls are different.

Once you feel comfortable, try downloading one of the two Pacific theatre supermods, like Fall of the Rising Sun or TMO. Both of them are in the subsim SH4 download section I linked to.

If you want the game to look like Wolfpack345's, here is his list of mods:

100_FalloftheRisingSun_Ultimate_v1.46_EN
Nippon_Maru_v1.2.1
TMOMapContacts for FotRS
DrJester's Environment Overhaul
FOTRSU_1.46_SUB_SKINS_IN_4k
Sub flag transfer to conning tower for FORSU 1.39
Fleetboat_Interior-Officers_Quarters_FOTRSU_v1.46_EN
302_MoreDifficultAI001
650_LotsaDudz
801_UMark Invisible

As for Silent Hunter 5, I don't like playing it very much but I do know the main supermod is "Wolves of Steel": https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/sho...d.php?t=210703
