How often did you read the words on a documentary about WW2 that it "contains never before seen footage"?

This time it's true: Tony Vaccaro took his camera to war in the Hurtgen Forest and in the Ardennes, and this is his visual testimony... supported in this moving programme by Pulitzer Prize winning photographers themselves clearly in awe of his artistry and integrity: he had a rule never to stage or arrange a shot

I don't even remember where I found this dvd it was so long ago. I haven't felt so keen to watch it (out of respect rather than queasiness) because of the warnings about "images of real dead bodies"... but I'm glad I finally did

Tony Vaccaro photographed an (at first) unknown comrade lying face-down in the snow during the Battle of The Bulge... then later, in recent times, met the man's son who had sought him out... a very moving story. He also caught a magnificetly jubilant moment in the liberation of a French town by the US Army... a fantastic image of spontaneous joy and relief

He wasn't an official photographer, just a soldier who happened to have a camera in his kit
