Default Strange login for SH3

Have recently returned to Subsim and have been trying to upload my original SH3 disc and then will add my saved GWX3 Gold files, etc, but get a failure with message that reads: "This application can be launched with a release version of Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2.1/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 20003 only." Can I mention today that I do have the 'no disc' util. file to insert.
I have all my saved MODS and SH3Cmd files to insert when I get the basic program installed, but am stalled at this point.
Any advice?

Getting SH3 from a DVD onto the Harddisk is called "Installing" not uploading. Also, when starting SH3 there is no Login. What you came across is the Errormessage from the StarForce-"Protection" of your SH3-DVD.
You can mention what ever you like, in any case you have to take then the consequences.

You may put this complete Message including the "" into Google. As this is not a MicroSoft-Problem you should not read any Hints on Microsoft-Servers, this would be a waste of time. Instead scroll down to the forum-subsim.com and start reading.

SH3 is now 15 Jears old. I claim that almost everything about Installing SH3 is discussed up and down, back and force on Internet including Subsim.

Are you installing or uploading? If you truly are uploading it and then trying to install it from wherever you uploaded it to that's not going to work no matter what you do. I also think you're mis-stating the term "installing" for "upload". Upload is when you place things on your computer on to an online location like a server, putting a photo on facebook is an example of uploading. Installing is when we run the process of placing a program on our computer to run and use that program.

The error you quoted IS a Windows notification of an error. What it means is the program you're trying to run is not compatible with the version of Windows your computer is running, the installation disk is too old, the version of Windows you have doesn't recognize it. This problem can usually be fixed by setting compatibility options however I'm not sure that fix is going to work since you're trying to install it from a CD/DVD but you can try that. Here's how to set compatibility options:

1. Navigate to the Setup.exe file. Right-Click on it and select Properties.
- in this case you would open File Explorer, navigate to the CD/DVD drive, right-click and "open", then navigate the CD directory to find the file named Setup.exe. Note that there may be a few setup.exe's on the disk. You want to do this to the one that's in the root (first) directories, the main Setup.exe.

2. After you right click and select "Properties" go in to the Compatibility tab of the properties window. Place a check mark in the box by left clicking on it next to "Run this program in compatibility modes for:" and use the drop down menu below it to select Windows 7.

3. Click Apply then Ok in the bottom right corner of that window then double-click on the exe to run it.

If you still get the error repeat steps 1 and 2 but in step 2 select Windows XP (SP3). If that doesn't cause it to run and install you're out of luck trying to get it installed from the CD. That doesn't mean you're completely out of options.

The game is available on Steam so it may be possible, if this game has a CD key, that you can install the Steam version by using your CD key. To do that you first need Steam if you don't already have it:

https://store.steampowered.com/about/
If you do already have Steam ignore the above link.

In the Steam Client, once it's running and you're logged in, click on "Games" at the very top of the window then choose "Activate a Product on Steam..."

Follow the prompts clicking next, ok , or accept appropriately. It will eventually ask you to enter your CD Key. If SH3 is one of the games Steam accepts CD keys for it will allow you to install it from there.

Ubisoft also offers a similar option but unfortunately it's only for their games released in 2014 or newer. SH3 was released in 2005 so using the CD key to get it from Ubisoft isn't possible. You can attempt contacting Ubisoft support and seeing if they do have that option for older games.

The above steps are to avoid buying the game again. Unfortunately SH3 might not be one of the games Steams accepts CD keys for. In that case the only option you have left is to buy it again digitally either through Steam (click HERE - SH3's Steam Store Page), The Ubisoft website (click this text to go to SH3's Ubisoft Store Page) or from another source you prefer that you find it available on.

Apologies to be windy. Hopefully this helps you.

Cassius:
Yes - I am trying to 'load' one of my old original diskettes.
And yep, I thought that the original diskette might not find compatibility with Win10 and other newer stuff.
I do have previous versions of SH3 loaded along with the patch and GWX gold but while the game seems to run properly in all aspects, it actually does not work correctly- the program opens and appears to run, but it does not, at the end of a mission, save data from and increase...what is it, not 'points' but 'spendable' sub upgrade values...aha, it's "Renown". If it did that all would be good since all my Mods load and work fine and going forward would be useful since I could upgrade the sub as things progress.
Will look at your advice and see what works.
Thanks, Archive1

No, it's not. Hebemaus is correct. Screenshots of this error were posted here years ago, and it was the error of the copy protection Starforce, not Windows.

Found this in a quicksearch on Ubisoftforums: You can make any DVD work on Windows 10 !!!!!

Convoi...
Looked for the Starforce corrective file, but cannot find a download from the Fiedler website. Is there a simple program that I can find to download and 'correct' my old original SH3 diskette upon download and install?
I do remember the Starforce hurdle, but no longer remember any of the problems or corrections that were available. I do remember that there was a work around for the CD requirement (some *.util replacement) but not the Starforce block.
Appreciate any advice.
