Today is Remembrance day in Canada and the Commonwealth and Veterans Day in America.

Here's to all who served and gave their lives.

Found this interesting story about two Canadian soldiers who did something remarkable while they were POWs in Japan during WW2.

Lieutenant-Commander Edward V. Dockweiler of the United States Navy, the senior Allied officer at Camp 3D at the time of our departure, wrote a report on the Nippon Kokan fire for American and Canadian military authorities. It read, in part:

About 20:00 hours on 18 January 1944, a large fire broke out in this yard, completely destroying the steel shed, ships outfitting stores, prisoner of war mess hall, riggers lobby, tool rooms, part of the shipfitters shop and mould loft. At this time, the yard was engaged in building escort destroyers and merchant shipping. Its tonnage production was about 8,000 tons per month. The fire was started by Staff Sergeant Clark, Canadian Postal Corps. and Private K.S. Cameron, Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps… This act of sabotage greatly crippled the production of this yard and directly minimized the Japanese war effort, and the contribution to the Allied War effort that these two men made under the handicap of being prisoners of war, cannot be overestimated. Their conduct as prisoners of war, while under my jurisdiction, was exemplary and fulfilled the highest traditions of the Canadian Army.

My Great Grandfather, KIA 3 October 1918. Fought through the entire war on multiple fronts, Verdun, Vimy Ridge, Riga, and died within sight of the end.

Was your family able to save any memories of/from him? Letters home, personal items?

There used to be a bunch of it. Apparently he was a quite prolific writer. Mom remembers her grandmother rereading his letters to her as a child. What has become of it all I don't know. Myself all I have is that picture and an Iron Cross medal but in recent years there has been some doubt in the family as to whether it was his or one of his brothers.
One of my cousins did send me his death certificate a few years ago. A gaudy thing that looks more like a diploma than a record of death but from that and some enlistment records I found through Ancestry.com I was able to decipher his unit, the 8th Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment. Apparently he saw a lot of action over the four years and was one of the original Storm Troopers participating in the battle of Riga and made the assault across the Dniper river in 1917.

His regiment was part of the 14th Bavarian Division.

To all those who served and, like August, have family that served. I would extend that to Scotland and Australia and New Zealand who served and fought alongside their English, Canadian and American counterparts. Lest we never forget their collective sacrifices.
