SH3 crashing in MED

I have been running the basic vanilla version of SH3 off of Steam for the past few months. Windows 10, no mods. I have been on at least 25 patrols in the North Sea and Atlantic with no problems. Game worked perfectly. I switched from the Atlantic to operating out of La Spezie for the past 3-4 patrols. On the past two patrols when either returning to base or soon after setting out, I get a loud click and the screen goes black, then returns to my Windows home screen. End of patrol, end of game. Any recommendations?

Something similar has happened to me when in the Mediterranean too. Usually with the map zoom in/out near the coast of Croatia.
Always causes a crash, so I never zoom the map while dragging the cursor over the Mediterranean basin. Something I've learned to live with.
