Default Simple Attacks

So, after mucking up many a “right way” TDC attack with the IDing and the measuring, and the AOBing, and the position keeping and the crew speed estimation and doing it again, I began searching for easier ways: here are what I’ve found. I’ll start with my current favorite simplest method:

A. No Muss Method.

Take the DoK or the JPC and make it even simpler.

1. Line yourself up on whatever angle you prefer, attacking from the front. 90 or 45 are clean, and easy, but any angle will work.

2. Get the target speed. You probably did this anyhow to get the AOB and line your attack angle. Is it any sane merchant speed (16 knots and below) and not destroyers hurling down the slot at 32? Great. Then we don’t need to worry about any mega math and can do this.

3. Multiply the speed by 1.18 (fast torps) or 1.75(slow torps). That’s your new 90 degree firing angle.

It’s absolutely imprecise math, and if you want you can use a firing chart or angle calculator to figure the angle instead, but those multipliers hold true for the majority of shots you’ll take.

3b. If it’s not 90 degrees, just adjust your angle accordingly. So if you’re 45 off, divide by 2.

4. Put the reticle on the target bearing. Shoot when the target crosses. If you’re less confident in your hasty read on the target speed, then a three spread at bow-MOT-stern works. More confident? Two spread, 1/4 and 3/4 marks on the target.

And there we go. No ID. No touching the TDC. No doing anything but pointing the boat as you’d have to anyhow.

I was in a harbour not long ago in a mission, there was a moored ship slightly at an angle, I lined up manually, fired the torp and it missed by a few inches, I couldn't believe it.

Then on other missions when everything is hectic, DD's circling and I take a hasty long shot and dive, and lo and behold I hit the target.
