The Tutorial is really good but he is overcomplicating the process.
You don't have to do all the divide by /100 * 3.33 thing which comes up in part II. Simple as it is you need to draw 2 circles one for the convoy speed and one for your own sub intercept speed. Just ensure to take the same scale unit. i.e if the convoy is going at 10 knots/hour draw the circle for the convoy speed with a radius of 1000m or 10 km. You want to intercept the convoy with 15 knots/hour draw the second circle at respectivily with a radius of 1500m or 15 km. Trigonometric you'll get the same intercept course. All in all not more than drawing 1. Line 1 = Bearing from uboat to target 2. Line 2 = Target course 3. Circle 1 = Target speed (center at target) 4. Circle 2 = own speed (center on intersection Circle1 with Line2) 5. Intercept course = Intersection Line 2 / Circle2 with Line1 / Circle1

This technique was written for SH3 but can still be done with the tools of SH5:

CAN DO! never mind the crazy math till close on the target(in sight). On your radio intercept ship or convoy map icon, using its small tail as a direction indicator, simply draw a line with your pencil tool on the map along the projected direction. Making note of the target speed from the message or the info box on your right, proceed at a higher speed to the line drawn and when at the line dive, go to slow speed, and turn toward the target icon and proceed (along the line) until your sonar picks up the engine sound(s) 100 km for convoys, 25 km for ships. When near coastal areas, be alert for target course changes to various ports which may deviate from the line. Good Hunting ! PS: don't feel bad, most kaleuns cheated on NAV math to avoid the Eastern front anyway!

Good point: if the icon has faded beware! however it can still be estimated from speed given to approx. position along the course line. The object is primarily to readily put the uboat athwart the target's likely course to enable the sound man with his hidden enemies upgrade to tighten on the actual location. Tha advantage is you generally are ahead of an oncoming target in the ideal position. I play all unmodified and it works for me. Ps: I AM a Pisces so it's all fishy mit der eels anyhow!

I've been trying Stoianm's video tutorial to the letter but in 4 intercept attempts, no joy. The above worked perfectly. It's been a bit of a mystery to me why you can't just find the target's course, work out a rough intercept point, figure out their speed and what time they'll get there and just make sure you get there early and submerge. Part of my problem may have been that all of my previous attempts were long distance, 24 hours at least and I find that projected target speeds, and courses tend to change. Oh well, thanks for the above. I'll use this in future. Last edited by Compans57; 05-24-20 at 09:14 PM. |
