10 Torpedos against 2 merchands, and nothing...all have missed
![]() The weather was the baddest one, 15 m/s wind speed, that surely was a factor. Against a C1 medium freighter with reported draft of 8.8, I have set torpedo depth to 4.6m and aimed a bit to the forward ship side (Auto TDC). Then changed other torpedos to around 3m depth, nothing they all missed ![]() Then, high damages incured for my sub as one of the merchand attacked me with deck gun. Because I could not use my deck gun, I went to the flak and fired HE shells. Did some damage but the ship's speed never went down...Then, flaks destroyed, flooding and high damages... Frustrated, I quit to main menu...One of my baddest patrols ever ![]() And who said that AutoTDC is so easy...I cannot confirm this ![]() Cheers, XS |

You most likely had duds or the ship lurched high from the waves to rise above the torp.
The correct depth at that weather was 6m. Not 4.6m. Also, I would set the pistol to magnetic.

Thanks Bstanko6, the high waves were for sure the reason, but I was afraid that setting too high a number for the depth would make them pass below the ship.
BTW: Only 2 duds out of the 10 fired, I miss-aimed all, they just missed or the ship has evaded them successfully! Only 1 or 2 actually did not explode. Greetings, XS |

Here is a difficult convoy setup with 11 ships and 10 (!) escorts:
https://ibb.co/K982zMw Engagement report: ----------------------- Location is North Cap, 14.00 GMT (night), rough sea with wind 15 m/s. After seeing I get no air support after my contact report, I decided to make a long range attack at 90° position, 3000 m from the first upper external merchands, giving me only 1600 m distance from the escorts by keeping minimal visible aspect angle at 0 speed, decks awash. My 4 forward tordpedos are all Type 1 Steam, I set to 'fast', 'magnetic', depth between 5.0-6.6 m (different depth for the 4 torp). The 2 first ones 'exploded early' after 3 seconds launched, the 2 other ones didn't even travel 30 seconds... I made a medium speed 180° turn to get the hell out of there on surface, still at decks awash, got spotted and fired my aft torp at the destroyer, 3m depth,- missed. Heavy damage taken, crew morale = 0, uncontrollable depth below 120m, forced to go flank to keep depth at 172m with flooding (manual diveplanes, 2 controlled manually), RIP because of hull breaches. ----------------------- All Torpedos were fired with Auto TDC to eliminate all solution errors. Is it a coincidence that all my 4 torpedos were duds? I can't believe it, it must have to do with bad weather and high waves... Setting the torp depth deeper than ship draft doesn't help, so I'm open for other suggestions, thank you! I have saved game just before visual spotting of convoy, so I can replay if I get some good ideas, I can tweak my savegame to have unlimited ammo, and fast torp reloading before playing again to test what's wrong. I don't think that Impact detonator would have performed better than Magnetic. XS Last edited by XenonSurf; 05-31-19 at 03:29 PM. |
