Guatemala volcano death toll up to 33, expected to rise

EL RODEO, Guatemala (AP) — The charred landscape left behind by Guatemala's erupting Volcano of Fire was still too hot in many places Monday to pull out bodies so thickly coated with ash that they looked like statues. First-responders in helicopters managed to pull at least 10 people alive from the ash drifts and mud as the death toll rose to 33 and was expected to go much higher.

Ash was piled up to the rooflines of some homes and rescuers used sledgehammers to break through the roofs of some completely buried houses to see if anyone was trapped inside.

The seismological, volcanic and meteorological institute Insivumeh heightened its warnings after the volcano erupted again earlier on Tuesday, forcing evacuations and sending rescue workers scrambling for cover.

The peak had its most devastating eruption in more than four decades on Sunday, showering ash on a wide area and sending lava flows through nearby towns.

The national disaster agency, CONRED, said 192 people remained missing after the disaster and the forensic agency, Inacif, raised the death toll to at least 75, up from 72.

Unfortunately, the death figure seems to rise.

I feel so sorry for these people over 75 dead and over 200 people are missing. Only 25 miles from Guatemala City ... notice the Atlantic and the Pacific border Guatemala ... why doesn't someone do something about living so close to a know volcano hazard such as this one?

I heard them say on TV that they will rebuild ... rebuild what?

Rich fertile ash soil attracts farming communities, to villages, that can grow to small towns.

This chain of explosive volcanoes goes from South America up into British Columbia. Seattle, WA and surrounding areas may be destroyed from the blast and sometimes almost supersonic winds, mud and debris flows when Mt Rainier decides to wake up again, yet people choose to live there. Last time a face slid off in the late 1800's activity that produced flows that part of Tacoma is now built on. Mt St Helens is in the Cascades too and people lived around it in logging communities. The ash rich soil grows beautiful Doug Firs, perfect timber for building.

People live near dormant volcanoes all around the world.

Thank you aanker, I didn't know that ... so hundreds of years in some cases allows the people to take a chance. I heard of one volcano in Japan that just erupted in April had been dormant for 250 years.

Yeah, that was a big one, they are lucky it wasn't even bigger.

One of the most famous volcanoes is the one that wiped out Pompeii back in Roman times (1st century). It has erupted many times since then and is still active as recent as the mid 1940's.

They say it is overdue for another huge eruption yet people still move back to it. If Mount Vesuvius erupted today, it could threaten more than 3 million people and wipe out the city of Naples.
