Hi all. I'm having issue re-aquiring submeged sonar contacts.
After the inital contact notification, I usually close to the minimum range, go to ultra quiet, stay on the same course for 2 or 3 mins (real time) then turn 90 degrees, stay on that course for a while and repeat. I do this above and below the layer (if there is one). After about 20 mins (real time) I get bored and bail, much to the disgust of the Admiral. I know that some of the Russian diesel boats are very quiet but...... Any advice would be gratefully appreciated |

That only ever happens to me when the ambient noise on the conditions tab is high, like over 100+ db
You're technique seems fine. What sub are you using? I never use the close to setting though, i always click battlestations just out of habit. I don't know how those differ. |

Losing contact early usually means you are not closing fast enough and/or going the wrong direction.
If you get an initial contact early and lose it, it's possible to swim in the wrong direction and never regain because you are not closing. Even 90 degree variations in the wrong direction for too long can put you off the track. Be sure to pay close attention to the briefing and stay within 45 deg of that until proven faulty. The default Narwhal while no one's favorite, will let you overtake quiet boats which have to make a lot of noise to extend distance on you. Also, the added quietness lets you detect quiet boats further away. If you are in the campaign, I could see why you would want to stay with a boat with more versatility than the Narwhal. Consider you might be too conservative early in the mission after looking at the initial contacts and staying quiet too long. Make note of initial range estimates as soon as you can. -Pv- |

Well I was in the middle of the campaign, but now........not so much! Off the Russian coast, I spent 20 minutes getting into a Victor's baffles and given him one of Uncle Sam's finest Mk48s. Unfortunately during my victory parade celebrations I got "put out of my misery" by two escorting Alphas that I had no idea were there ![]() So in my next campaign I will definately take the Narwhal out for a spin. I'm currently doing the '84 campaign in a 688 (just got the game). Love it. As far as hunting goes I go silent until I see something, try to ID it and go guns blazing at it.

I am in the same situation. I often just get a bearing and analyze for where to set that torpedo to go active on the bearing. BUT, I read that KFG is adding neutral ships and oil rigs. I will have to be a little slower. I hope HQ chews me out for taking out an oil rig.
An older sim had fish schools, too. |
