Way too dark at night

I'm trying to like this game but I'm having a really hard time. I got a couple of tiny mods up and running after some weird issues, but now just playing basically the vanilla game is almost impossible at night.

Seriously. I can't see a thing. I understand that it gets dark at night, that's just mother nature.

But this is a game and I'd like to be able to see what's happening.

This is definitely not a gamma issue. If I turn the gamma up, everything gets far too bright and even screws up the contrast so it's still difficult to see anything.

I don't understand. It's so bad that this is basically a game breaker for me. Are there any mods or is there anything I can do to make night brighter?
