Silent Hunter series and Steam?

I purchased Silent Hunter 4 from Steam. Sadly the screen blacked after the starting movie. I could hear the game music just no screen. Tried several tips provided just never could get the black screen corrected.

My question is this the Steam version of the game? Would a retail version from say like Amazon be better? Is SH 3, 4 and 5 compatible with Win 10?

Thanks guys much appreciated any info.

from what you are saying it would appear that you have had a Windows 10 update.
You are not alone, with many forum members reporting the same, or similar black screen. sound, graphics problems.

If you are using a Nvidia gpu what is your current driver version.
You will find it here, mine is 376.53

There seems to be issues appearing more frequently on the forum regarding black screen or sound and no pictures with the game crashing.
First let's not blame Ubisoft as the game running one day and crashing the next with the problems mentioned is not a game problem.
My suspicions would be around WIndows 10 updates and with it Microsoft updating incompatible drivers like the 382.05 one.
This seems to be borne out by re-installing the game drivers has cured the problem.

When that happens to me I have to go to my documents folder and change the main.cfg to turn v-sync on and that fixes it. "Synchronized=Yes"

Adding to the question of Steam and SH series - I read some time ago that SH3 and/or SH5 cannot run some megamods if they were purchased from Steam.

Right now Steam offers SH3+SH4+SH5 for 15 euros, and I am thinking of buying it, but am concerned if everything will work correctly.

Any advice?

AFAIK Steam and mods is not a problem.
With SH5 Steam is not compatible with an essential application and therefore not compatible.
SH5 vanilla without the application is bugged and unplayable.
There are Steam conversions for all SH3-4-5 games in my signatures.
