Nixie torpedo decoy tactics

I am noob with Anti sub ships and have no idea how to use properly nixie torpedo decoy. Any advices?

Just stream it when you are being engaged by a torpedo or you believe you are about to be engaged by a torpedo.

I am not sure about the effectiveness of the Nixie especially in the various mods. I don't think it is effective against wake homing torpedoes either.
