Too few voluntary soldiers, too few qualified ones - Sweden has decided to go back to the conscription model, which will be a mandatory draft for all generations born from 1999 on. Men and women will be draftet.
http://www.government.se/press-relea...ficial-report/ Technically it makes sense, if you have not enough volunteers. Morally however a state having the power to command citizens and force them into war service like any subordinate or slaves, is a highly questionable thing, from a libertarian point of view. I have no solution for this conflict to offer. Its one of the dilemmata of life. I also wonder what they will do with the many Muslim young women whose families will go crazy over the idea. Sweden as a very huge Muslim influx, and already now plenty of problems with it. Will special rights be granted? Double standards practised?

That or import Slovenes.
Half the aplicants that are fit for the army are turned down every year because there are no open spots. They should be given a chance to re-aply with Sweden |

I was thinking more along the lines of Gustavus Adolphus's feared Drabants...swift retreats were rewritten into their opponents' tactical manuals!

First media news yesterday that I read, was not precise, it seems. The deicison is not already made, but it is very likely.
The Swedish armed forces need 4000 recruits per year currently, this demand will grow over the coming years to 8000 per year. That is more than thy get volunteers, but a general draft would provide more recruits then the forces need or could use. which means that every year only some will be chosen, and many, most will keep their freedom. This of course is anything but equal treatment, and is very unfair for those who need to go into service while not wanting it, while many others "escape". I thus would prefer that the armed Swedish forces try to attract more volunteers through better payment, working conditions and perspectives. They said that 15 years ago the Swedes could have mobilised up to 800,000, though they would have needed long time for that number. They are currently in a very close cooperation and alliance mode with the Fins, and synchronise their decisions with each other. Defence budget cuts have been massive in recent ten years. They now realise that this was a big mistake. Meanwhile, Germany chief socialist Sigmar Gabriel travels to Moscow and does not even blink when Putin greets him as a "close, welcomed, allied friend", and German foreign minister Schleichmeier'S biggest concern is to hurt nobody and to not confront anybody. Especially not in Russia. Well, maybe the Germans knoiw somethignt hat the Swedes still need to learn: that appeasement can compensate for a conscription army. Beside the Americans, the Germans also were the loudest ones, announcing that Putin was not seriously interested in Syria, and that he only wanted to pose and boast to get a better chair at the international table. For somebody who does not mean serious business in Syria and only wants to chit-chat and play with the boys a bit, Putin plays unexpectedly tough, doesn't he. Which does not stop the German Bundestag parties to criticise the Swedes already and to make clear that the likely decision in Sweden is not beeing seen as "constructive". I assume they want Sweden to do like Germany's socialists: to close their ties with the Russian regime. If I put down my sword, the sword in the hand of the other will disappear as well, all by itself. Happy times are here again!

Conscription was a big mistake of the previous government to take away, which has been commented by others here, this operation will at least be able to secure the supply of key strategic pieces in the armed services.
