Default Question about scope markings.

There are many astonishing mods for pretty much anything SH3 will allow, and some really neat scope art. One thing I never figured out though is, what were the actual marks on the attack scope and obs scope respectively on a type VII?

I have looked around the web and looked at scope view photos with different markings but none I found said wether they were A scope shots or O scope shots.

Do anyone know what the actual scope marks looked like on both scopes?

(Also, and just throwing this in here as a digression: Yesterday I read an amazing post _somewhere_ where some guy came up with a set of rather beautiful maths formulas for solutions. Problem is, now I can't for the life of me find it on the wide open web.

Key elements he talked about:
Final observation: Measure range to target, AoB and bearing angle which unlike bearing is only defined for <-180*, 0*> or <0*, 180*> as well as gather target speed data.
Track angle: The future target-torpedo AoB on impact.
Lead angle: In essence bearing to target when launching torp.
Track range: Distance torpedo will travel from launch to hit, calculated beforehand.
Torpedo run time: Time from launch to impact, calculated beforehand.
Time to position: Time from final observation to launch, calculated at final obs.

His post also had diagrams explaining very well how it all worked and when you did what calculation.

Does any of this ring a bell? Any hunch on where this was posted?

Known as tick marks, the way you use them depends on the gui you use. I use maGUI F and these tick marks are used on the attack ring. This ring, takes the tick marks, mast height of a target ship and gives me the range, and AOB respectively. It is a learning curve, but once you learn how to use it, you will never use a stadtometer again.

Conovaro has a great download of different forms that help you use the tick marks manually without the ring. I use this for the UZO.

Wazoo had many tutorials That sound like what you are talking about. Good luck.

Thanks for the post. However, I'm not wondering about how to use the marks or tick marks if you like What I wonder about how did the real marks on real periscopes look like. Reason I ask is, like I said earlier, that no photo I have seen tells whether the photo was taken through an attack scope or observation scope, and those two could very well, and I believe they did, have different mark layouts.

Not sure how I can make myself understood. That image I have seen but that too does not say whether it was taken through an attack scope or taken through an obs scope. It is THAT piece of information I am looking for. I'll try in a different way:

I have seen pics like the one you linked, with the marks at the far left and far up. Then I have seen some with the horizontal marks at the centerline, and the vertical marks a little left of center, then other shots (on a rare occation) with no marks at all, claiming to be from a german sub. But NOONE say which photo is taken through the attack scope and which photo is taken through the obs scope.

What I am looking for is some kind of documentation on what the attack scope marks layout was like and what the obs mark layout was like.

I am NOT looking for general images of scopes with no info or no reliable info on whether it was an a scope shot or an o scope shot.

EDIT: Update
I have found this
http://www.tvre.org/en/acquiring-torpedo-firing-data

The most important bit I read there is there were various types (models/makes from various manufacturers) and they appear to have different markings so that a quote "type ASR C/13 attack periscope" had marks, or graticule, that was different from the graticule on a quote "Type StaSR C/2 attack periscope".

Another thing that complicates things is that these scope images from these models are often post-war models, that is they were never used on a VII during the war.

Then a new question pops up: Wasn't the graticule standarized for a say, type VIIB sub or did the different shipyards install different makes of scopes on the subs?
