Default Single missions leaking into career saves?

I am running SH3 1.4b with GWX 3.0 on Windows 8.1, and after reinstalling running as admin in compatibility mode and disabling UAC and my antivirus, I've reduced in-game CTDs to a manageable level (runs OK as long as I don't save during a mission and don't go over 256x time compression in high traffic areas). However, I've recently noticed a strange error - after checking out XXI in the GWX single mission "April Fools", I went back to my career profile and noticed that the latest career save showed me commanding a Type XXI instead of the Type VIIB that should have been there. I loaded the "in base after mission" save just above it, but it too was a bit buggy - I received more crew medals even though they'd already been assigned. Other than that, it appears to still be working, but this worries me. Is this a known issue? Is there anything I can do?

It breaks my heart that this game is so unstable on Windows 8. I never had an issue with Windows 7. SH3/GWX is one of my favourites, but the crashes and bugs are wearing on my nerves and I'm starting to think I may have to shelve this one permanently

I've had similar, but in reverse - I started the "Gibraltar" mission in vanilla SH3, choosing a type VIIb suitable for the year, and found myself commanding a type IXC (from my current career), with an IXC-sized crew, but a VIIb torpedo loadout & tubes.

The problem occurs presumably because there's only one playersettings.cfg file extant in play, whatever career or mission you're in. A presumed bug fails to set the correct boat type in that file. Cured my problem, after a little head-scratching, by starting a new career with a type VIIb boat, then restarting the mission. Perhaps you could use the same "fix" - start a mission or new career with the correct boat type. I haven't had the "medals" problem (yet).

Thanks for the reply, Rambler241. Looks like a stock SH3 bug and, as you say, the single config seems to be the most likely cause of these errors.

Now I've encountered a new problem... twice now the game has not only crashed but shut down my computer and restarted SH3, you're lucky I love you so much...

Indeed - there are small compensations, like those glorious sunsets.
