Default Your favourite Sub to play?

G'day guys,

I was just curious to know what your favourite sub is for missions.

I play in the Flt II LA boats (USS Pittsburgh to be exact - don't ask me why) the most, then H.M.S. Trenchant (for the cool cam) and Collins SSG for Aussie missions.

The LA boats aren't the quietest around, but gee they look cool!

I'm keen to get more into the Sturgeon for Cold War missions, but they're challenging to keep undetected!

Seawolf and Virginia? Cool boats but it's almost too easy to defeat old SSKs and surface targets...

I haven't tried the Russian boats much...but it'd be fun to learn how they work next!

Discuss!

The Russian boats are nice for multiplayer because they have the missile torpedoes to quickly rain down hell on your enemies Assuming you can detect your enemies first haha other than that, you can always just snapshot on the TIW bearing Other than that, their sonar and, therefore, TMA is a lot trickier because of the lack of waterfall. Not impossible, but definitely trickier.

Seawolf is a lot of fun but it's easy to get rusty on your TMA skills with that nifty WAA

I've always played the Russian subs for whatever reason. I love the looks of them, and the ships themselves are better except in stealth and sonar capabilities. they make up for it in speed, depth, and the vast and diverse armament you can carry on them. I mean what do the US boats have for arms? Mk-46 or 48 torps, tomahawks, and harpoons if you lucky. my Akula has two torpedos that can be used for asw and wakehoming asuw, anti ship missiles, anti-sub missiles, land attack cruise missiles, rocket torpedos, oh and I have 8 torpedo tubes that I can load them into. I used to play the Akula exclusively when I had the stock game, but since getting the RA mod Ive tried out some of the other boats, and am actually favoring an alfa right now.

And because of this I tried playing an American sub a little while back, I couldn't figure out the waterfall display and the depth being in feet really messed me up. I like how its easier to detect contacts with a waterfall sonar, but I still sometimes get lost with it, the Russian round display is easy for me because I can visually see the exact direction like a compass, and can easily figure its bearing relative to mine. to each his own though.

I love the Alfa class. always have, speed is life although they were not really used in that way. But I feel like the RA mod still has a ways to go on that particular boat.

1) My boat was once crushed at 500m. Even conservative estimates for the Alfa put test depth at 350m which implies a crush depth of at least 700m. Optimistic claims for the Alfa put max operating depth at 700m with crush depth beyond 900m. As I understand it these were fairly deep diving boats that were restricted to 350m for longevity sakes, not concerns of strength. Titanium is high maintenance.

2) Even when I change the database to give it a deeper crush depth, the boat still cavitates happily to beyond 900m. I understand it has a 5 blade prop but this boat cavitates far, far too easily. I once held a little experiment. I don't remember the depth but my finding was that the Akula can run something like 30 knots while the Alfa can only run 18 knots, at the same depth, before cavitating.

3) Can engage surface targets with snapshot ONLY using SET-65. Once had small surface target (british mine hunter) receive 3 SET-65 torpedos before sinking.

4) Alfa would run happily at 41 knots but could go to 44-45 knots for short periods. This is important because 41 knots is a great transit speed but when a torpedo is inbound every spare knot counts for the duration of the escape.

alfas were restricted to 450m due to hull cracking rated down to 750m when they were built restricted only 5 years after they entered service

alfas were always really noisey especialy at speed the prop's didn't help matters, alfas coming off the cape at 40knots could be heard as far away a Bermuda some 2500 miles RA is fairly accurate in this respect.

Being heard far away is not necessarily indicative of the relative noise level of the Alfa. It has to be the hardest running ship to routinely reach the deep sound layer, which carries sounds thousands of miles. What I mean to say is that even a Seawolf running flanks speed at 700m would be heard far, far away.

Yes, but if you are making noise in the deep sound layer, to be herd (I think) someone has to be/listen in the deep sound layer too, and that means not another U.S. submarine... SOSUS maybe?
