Default Winter 2014-15

I think it is time for another winter thread, rather than resurrecting last years' thread.
It is snowing here and has been for the last day or so. The temperature is hovering right around 32F with no wind. Really a pleasant night. The night before last it got down to 20F.

I keep meaning to post in the 'What Are You Doing Now' thead, but also keep forgetting.

Last week it was getting up to 70/21. Overnight it dropped. Right now it is 19/-7. No snow, though.

In North Virginia, we have been dipping close to freezing. Unfortunately, we have has some wind and that always makes it seem a lot colder.

The Mutts at the dog park were eager to get back in the warm car after a while.

So far, no snow, but I think we are getting freezing rain on Monday.

Yuk! You can keep the freezing rain! I prefer snow over that other stuff!

Thanks for the update from the frozen north.
We're getting temps in the 40's/ 20's and had a trace of snow the other night. Enough to turn the grass white.

Moscow temperatures are around 0 degrees centigrade, so not all that bad.

I just checked the weather and by this time on Monday we could have another 6" of the stuff. The forecast is for either snow or 'flurries' all week.

Flurries are nasty, we have those every winter on roads due to the de icing agent being used. This agent also (allegedly) is corrosive and ruins your shoe wear

I really don't think that the de-icing agent can be blamed for the flurries. But I do think it can be blamed for destroying leather shoes. Put lots of silicone on your leather shoes (or oil them real good) and MAYBE they might survive the winter.

The de-icing agent, is it calcium chloride or magnesium chloride? They are both corrosive, the mag. chloride is not as nasty as calc. chloride.

Got the first sleet about two weeks ago....got actual sleet yesterday and today it's snowed an inch already and still going.

Was real fun deer hunting today in the sleet/snow mix. Shot at a deer and went off to go find the blood trail. Ended up having to walk through waist deep freezing cold water.

Never even found that frickin' deer. No blood or hair on the ground.

I polish my Red Wings to a high gloss shine once a week. Nothing fancy, just Kiwi shoe polish applied liberally, especially along the seams and they've gone 7 winters now.

You look after your boots/shoes and they will look after you.
Calcium and magnesium chloride will suck the moisture out of just about anything. In the spring of the year I spray that stuff on gravel roads for dust control and I am here to tell you that after about 2 weeks of that (I try NOT to get it on me) the skin comes off me in sheets. It blisters my hands (dry blisters) and off comes the skin.
