Default Okay, I HAVE To Own This Book

It's not due out until May 2014, but I think this jumped right to the top of my "must own" list:

In all seriousness, Peter Goodwin's "manual" on the HMS Victory is pretty nice, and even includes step-by-step instructions on repairing a capstan, tacking into the wind, raising anchor, and so on. He's a former Polaris submariner, so I'm really hoping this book goes into all kinds of detail only "we" can appreciate.

Thanks for posting that Subnuts! This should appeal to my inner "geek" nicely.

Haynes no longer lists this on their site, but Amazon US and Amazon UK still have it available for pre-order, and Peter Goodwin is doing a presentation at the RN submarine museum on April 17th about creating this book. Wonder what's going on? I'll just pre-order and hope for the best.

Firing on the 'down roll' should reveal the 'inner geek' very nicely from 50 guns a side! I'll be getting Godwin's "manual" myself! Thanks for the heads up Subnuts!

I wonder if he'll bring some copies along for a signing session?

Amazon UK just moved the release date up to June 3 2015.
Really not impressed with Hayne's lineup this year. They had a whole bunch of great "workshop manuals" last year on vehicles like the B-24, Churchill tank, Empire flying boat, Vickers Wellington, and the Apollo 13 spacecraft. I've only bought two new books from them this year - one on the Queen Mary 2 which had some cool material but felt like a big promotional puff piece from Cunard, and their book on Spitfire restoration, which again, had some cool stuff in it, but tried to cram too much in too short a book.

I used to be addicted to these Haynes "manuals," but I'm starting to think the honeymoon period is over...

Subnuts, I wonder if the delay has anything to do with the fact that the restoration project to restore HMS Alliance is now complete? A nice shiny sub would a great place to take new photos for the manual, or correct any errors. Just a thought.

Default Beware Amazon

Amazon is not all it seems.

In 2008 I self-published a book/novel which means I was doing all the marketing and selling myself. And it didn't take long to find my book offered on Amazon at an outrageous price. I knew at that time who bought every copy and the seller was not one of them.

Many post sales on Amazon and similar sites before they actually own the product. If it sells they can then buy it, (I suppose), at the normal price and ship it to the unknowing person who paid too much.

My brother in law, who does antiques, found an item on eBay that was being sold by an unknowing person for $15. He bought it and immediately put it back on sale for $150.00. I was there and witnessed it. He was proud! Not illegal, but he also has several ID's on eBay so he can bid on his own sales and drive up the prices. Illegal. He is a jerk and deserves my sister!

They're probably going to spend the next year arguing whether or not they should include any pictures of the hideous 60s decor in the ERA's and Officer's messes.

Okay, necro-thread time. Hayne's website finally has this book listed, and given a April 2015 release date: http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/s...8701&langId=-1

Here's hoping the year-long delay was for the better, because if this book is as bad as the U-boat manual Haynes churned out last year, you'll probably have to put a gun to my head before I'd buy another Haynes naval reference.

No doubt even though I have no interest in UK subs I'm sure the drawings and tech stuff will be superb!

Well, I enjoyed Peter Goodwin's three "anatomy of the ship" books and his HMS Victory "Workshop Manual," so at least the odds are pretty good it won't suck. I'm just worried all the illustrations will be recycled from the Anatomy of the Ship book...

Yes, that is a likely outcome now that you mention it

Anatomy of the Ship: The Submarine Alliance was written by John Lambert and David Hill; I believe that Mr. Lambert provided the illustrations. Hopefully, the Haynes book will present new material. I want it, too - I hope that the slippage of the release date is just because they want to release a tip-top product. We shall see.
