I haven't had much luck with them but i try to be parallel and infront of a convoy so that the pattern will cross the collums at 90*. How do you line them up?

Zoom the TDC screen out and you'll realize the different settings consequences while altering them. The torpedo track is showing.
In basic: you have one variable gyro setting - just like with the regular eels - but after a set distance the FAT legs back 180° and again forth 180° ( a ladder pattern) until it hits or runs out of power. You can switch the length of the legs between 800m and 1600 m and you can determine the initial unfolding direction of the pattern. The LUT will have a second variable gyro setting - to enable you shooting perpendicular into the convoy from any position in relation to the convoy. The pattern is no more fixed to turning 180°.
