Maybe if you became an extremely successful supply boat captain you could change the course of the war and bring the BdU to victory, but since the allies had broken the enigma codes, how long do you think it would take before they crafted a mission to destroy all U-supply boats and yours in particular. I rather think it's dangerous enough just with a 'normal' boat as it is.

yes i know.. but i think is kind of interesting to have to manage this mission and avoid planes and destroiers.after tha its allready difficult to survive after '43 with 100% realism and hardcore fixies, imagin to get and a supplie mission...

What a cool idea. I'd never have the gumption to try it, but kudos for originality!

Paraphrased and summarized from one of my U-boat texts, here's what they have to say about the supply submarine...
In the early war, Uboats had been resupplied at sea by surface tankers, but as the war dragged on, these were quickly hunted down. From Sept. 1940 to April, 1941 Germany lost 5, one of which checked in at over 10,000 tons. By Dec. 1941 tanker losses had become so severe that they were withdrawn from service until another means could be developed to resupply U-boats while at sea. The answer seemed to be the supply submarine, affectionately known as 'the milch cow'. These Type XIV (15) boats were 1,688 tons, had a range of 12,300 miles and carried 720 tons of diesel fuel in addition to their own supplies. Ten of these boats were laid down in 1941 and came on-stream in 1942. Tasked with meeting up with patrolling u-boats at prearranged co-ordinates, the milch cow could restock a U-boat with fuel, torpedoes, and/or other ammunition, fresh food, drinking water, medical equipment or supplies, even evacuate injured sailors and swap with viable crewmembers. By far, the largest number of boats operational was the Type VII, 517 tons, and with a limited range of about 7,000 miles. But the distance from Lorient to Halifax is about 2,500 miles and to New York, about 3,000 miles, and when assigned to those areas, the type 7s had barely made it to their patrol billets, when they were forced to return. The Milch Cows were to remove or reduce this handicap, and when sinkings declined in the American coastal waters and patrols were assigned to areas farther away, thanks be to the milch cows that allowed the type 7s to continue battle operations.

Step 1: Choose a IXD2
Step 2: Remove Deck Gun Step 3: Fire all torpedoes when departing from port Step 4: Travel to assigned Patrol Grid Step 5: Stay at patrol grid for 20 Days, surfaced, and continually transmit patrol reports to BdU. Try to stay alive! |

AS SHIII is trouble enough with GWX; being a Type XIV U-boat modification of the Type IXD, designed to resupply other U-boats. Milchkühe (pl.)" (milk cows) is an absolute exercise in suicide. The milk cows were priority targets for Allied forces, as sinking one milk cow would effectively curtail the operations of several regular U-Boats and force them to return home for supplies. Ultra intercepts provided information concerning sailing and routing, and this, coupled with improved Allied radar and air coverage in the North Atlantic, eliminated most of them during 1943. By the end of the war all ten had been sunk. Milk cow duty was especially hazardous; 289 sailors were killed out of an estimated complement of 530–576 men. They had no torpedo tubes nor deck gun, and carried only antiaircraft armament. In hastily examining the demise of the individual boats, approx. half the captains appear to have survived. [WIKI]
Ten boats of this type were commissioned:U-459, commissioned 15 November 1941, scuttled 24 July 1943
