Can you give an example? I would first guess a dollar (100 cents), but I do not know the context.

"100ct." 'per carton' is most common usage.

Are you talking about the subs bringing supplies to Manila?

It could be '100 count', as in propeller beats picked up on the hydrophones.

I'll get a full quote the next time it comes up, it was in a message alerting me to Intel about where a convoy was going to be. There were coords, and a time/date. The (some number)ct. Was part of the date/time portion of the radio message.

AHA! 'context' helps! Central Time - USA + Canada

Central Standard Time (CST) = GMT-6
Central Daylight Time (CDT) = GMT-5 To see time in a separate window press Central Time

What time zone Central Standard Time (CST)?

Central Standard Time is the Central Time Zone of the United States of America (USA). Central Standard Time (CST) is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-6).
When does Central Time change Daylight Saving Time?

In most states in the USA and in most provinces in Canada, Daylight-Saving Time (DST) is observed. During DST CT (or CDT) is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-5).
After the Summer months Central Time is shifted back by 1 hour to US Central Standard Time (CST) or (GMT-6). etc etc! If the Germans are on GST (German Summer Time) and England is on GMT(Greenwich Mean Time) two hours behind the Germans, no wonder those 'timely Ultra intercepts' served so poorly as opposed to on-the-spot DFing and 10 cm. radar! My guess is your transmissions are "central time"(CT) which the astute commander will then calculate: relative to his actual position, time-zone and Intl' Date Line-wise to determine the relevance of the info and subsequent course of action.

That was my thought, but you numbers like 70ct. Too.... These days I'd expect any group to use Zulu time as the common base, letting the receivers do the math for local time. Did the US or USN use Central Time as a common time base during WWII? Or was it Zulu / GMT?

In any case how would you read 70ct. 7am? Would 100ct. Be 10am? What would 10 pm be? 220ct? Would 10:30am be 105ct? Or 103 ct?

Here's another wrinkle

Quote:
DST was first adopted to replace artificial lighting so they could save fuel for the war effort in Germany during World War I at 11:00pm (23:00) on April 30, 1916. It was quickly followed by Britain and many countries from both sides, including the United States. Many countries reverted back to standard time post-World War I, and it wasn’t until the next World War that DST would make its return to many countries in order to save vital energy resources for the war.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted year-round DST in the United States, called “War Time” during World War II from February 9, 1942 to September 30, 1945. The law was enforced 40 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and during this time, time zones were called “Eastern War Time”, “Central War Time”, and “Pacific War Time”. After the surrender of Japan in mid-August 1945, the time zones were relabeled “Peace Time”.

Daylight saving was first recognized as an energy saving aspect during World War II when Double Summer Time was applied in Britain which moved the clocks two hours ahead of GMT during the summer and one hour ahead of GMT during the winter.

In case anyone is still reading, here's the original message...

Quote:
To: TF42 Forces Afloat
For units in the Solomon Islands area. There are indications that a IJN re-supply mission will attempt to land troops and supplies on Guadalcanal late PM 90ct / early AM 100ct.
Estimated route will have IJN units proceeding down the SLOT at high speed. Units operating within striking distance attempt to intercept
So to reiterate, what does "late PM 90ct / early AM 100ct" mean?

"ct" IMHO is simply 'current time' for operations area. You got action pending from 9PM to 0100(early)AM in the Slot/Solomon Islands.

I think that there is a typo in the game text (missing space and "0" instead of "O"), the HQ want to say late in the evening of 9th of October 1942( 9 Oct) and early morning of 10th of October 1942 ( 10 Oct), you should try to intercept in that zone of Guadalcanal. The message probably arrived on the 6-7-8 of October 1942, check your Captain log "Messages received".
You should wait for them south of Savo Island on the night from the 9th of October to the 10th.
