Help. New player here. What mods to get?

I have tried to decipher through old threads (some 7 yrs old) and I was wondering what up to date mods I may need when it comes to *gameplay* only. IE, mods that fixes bugs, glitches, AI improvements, etc.

Certainly, at some point I would like to get more involved with eye candy mods but right now I would like a list of must have mods that fixes basic gameplay bugs or at least work arounds for glitches, etc...

Also, a 'modern', relevant thread about crew management would be helpful.
