Picking specific boat

Is there a way to mess with the game engine to guarantee a particular boat (hull number) instead of just the class of boat? For example, what if I wanted to start a career in USS Tambor (SS-198) and not just any Tambor or Gar class sub?

That one's actually simple. Windows explorer,

\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Roster\American\Submarine\

Open the SSTambor.cfg in notepad.

[Unit 1]
Name=USS Tambor
DOC=19400603
DOD=19451210

[Unit 2]
Name=USS Tautog
DOC=19400703
DOD=19451208

[Unit 3]
Name=USS Triton
DOC=19400815
DOD=19430315

[Unit 4]
Name=USS Thresher
DOC=19400827
DOD=19451213

[Unit 5]
Name=USS Trout
DOC=19401115
DOD=19440229

[Unit 6]
Name=USS Tuna
DOC=19410102
DOD=19461211

Change all the red names to USS Tambor and you'll get that name every time.

...or just open the save game file and change the name of the sub there, unless seeing the name of the sub being presented to you is important, then go with what sniper said.

Documents > SH4 > Save Game > ActivePlayerUnits.upc (if it's not that one then it's CarrerTrack.upc)
